I am new to the list and I find a need to make breeders aware of a situation I am involved in....I purchased a kitten from Linda of Topcattery of California, where she guarranted me in writing that the male pursian that I was interested in buying was PKD negative...

After sending all monies to Linda she informed me that she would not send my paperwork on my purchased kitten until additional monies be sent her to cover misfigured airline expense(on Lindas part)...I had already paid her the asking price plus all air fare expenses she had requested, but she held my paperwork on my kitten until I paid her an additional charge.

I intern received this kitten, who is a beautiful blue tabby male, sent in to Gribbles, as I always do, to have his PKD testing done, only to be shocked to find out that he is positive.

I contacted Topcattery, requesting again, a copy of this boys parents PKD papers of which to this day I have yet to receive. She advised me to sell him, and not make the buyer aware of his PKD positive results, I could not do this with a clear concience as I strongly do not agree with that type of breeders tactics.

Linda found a buyer for this kitten, but she deliberatly misled the buyer about the PKD results, as she did me...now she is advertising him on her site , as available for sale, under the Available Adults link on her homepage.... .she is advertising this cat as his parents being negative.

I went so far as to have him retested a second time thru UC Davis Laboratory, and the results were the same....

at first she appeared to be surprised as to this turn of events, and offered to work with me to resolve the problem, I do not want another kitten from her cattery as I feel she is deceitful to her clients....I still have this cat in my cattery and he is registered to me, and the only solution is to get my money back, but according to Linda, money is not available for refund ....even though she put in writing that I could have my money back, as she knew I did not want any positive kittens.

I am willing to work with her on this, but when she posted this boy on her site again that his parents are PKD negative , and is asking more that I paid for him, this just goes against my principles. If she has done this to me, how many others has this been done too.

Linda told the interested buyer from New York that I had to part with him for personal reasons, that was completely a lie, as I have a cattery that I am building new....and will only breed PKD negative kittens. She sold this cat to me, and if I would have bred him without testing him first, and taken her at only her word....I would have had positive kittens with my first litter on the ground and my reputation would have been ruined before I even got started.

She was aware up front of my opinions on this issue and sold him to me deliberatly as a neg cat when indeed she new he was not....his father is positive.

Thank you for your time in reading this...I hope I have helped someone else from making the same mistake that I did by dealing with Topcattery.

Bad Breeder!

First, I want to say how sorry I am that this happened to you, I know it happened a while ago but I still wanted to reach out to you. I hate bad breeder stories like this and have worked very hard over the years to combat these bad experiences with positive ones in my own cattery. When a buyer walks away from a sale such as this type, they should feel proud and happy to own a pedigreed kitty, not disappointed and regretful worrying how they are going to afford all the vet bills they are going to be saddled with. I too experienced a bad transaction with this breeder that not only taught me what to look for, but also what never to do to someone else. Bad breeders like this make the good responsible breeders look bad. It defines the real breeders who care from the backyard breeders. It just takes a few bad apples to ruin the whole bunch! Take heart poster, this irresponsible so-called breeder has closed her doors...for now at least. I hope that due to everyone filing complaints against her and for your report. I would not be surprised though to see her pop up again sometime in the future. Buyers beware if you are going to buy a pedigreed cat or dog make sure you ask for paperwork and proof up front. A responsible breeder should never breed PKD positive cats and should not have them in their breeding program at all, period. A responsible breeder will not deny you this information nor will they deny you the opportunity to look at all of the animals in the home. I purchased a breeding female from another breeder and was told I could not see the rest of the stock and was even told they were in the basement of all places for cats to be! Persians are very sociable sweet cats and need to be around people, not locked in a basement or in cages. Just like Linda, I was told I could not see the other cats. Amazing, you would think I would have learned my lesson with that one. If a breeder tells you that, run away, they have something to hide. We allow our interested clients to walk around our entire home and look at all of the cats we have. We do not hide any of our cats for any reason. Do not accept any excuses of any kind! We also provide negative PKD information and pedigrees on both parents and real verifiable client referrals. Check them out before you buy and make sure you do a search on the internet such as these kinds on all of the catteries you are considering. The breeder in this complaint was supposed to be a reputable one, you and I both found out that was not true. She treated her fellow breeders worse than her other clients especially if she felt they were below her or were newbies to the hobby. We were easy targets for her. Do your homework and research before buying even if that takes a couple of years, it will be worth it in the end. If the kitten or cat is sneezing for any reason or is matted or dirty or the parents are not kept up and healthy do not buy from them. When you visit a cattery, you should be allowed to see how the kitten or cat acts in their environment and how they socialize with each other, you, and your family. If they are in a carrier or a cage when you arrive as ours was with us, you are not going to be able to see how they act. In our case, the girl we purchased was not socialized as she was born and raised in a cage. It took us over two years to get her out of that and she still runs from us sometimes. I visited a cattery where the sire was dirty and heavily matted and was allowed outdoors to mate with the neighborhood females as well as the females in the cattery and all of the cats had fleas! There are plenty of good catteries out there; you do not have to settle. Visit multiple catteries more than once before making a final decision. We tell our interested clients to think about it for a few days and discuss it with your family first. I hope this information has helped whoever is reading it. I hope the buyer from New York did not end up buying the cat from Linda after all. The kitten we got from her was also PKD positive and we had to spay her. We still have her as our family pet but never could breed or place her with another family after we knew she was positive. It is understood that we never did get our money back from her. Good luck to you, I hope it all worked out for you in the end and all the others this breeder has defrauded over the years.
