A rare occasion where I'll side with the car dealer. I suspect it was a LITTLE difficult for the sales manager to SEE: the steering wheel was not dead center, the A/C was making noise, the A/C system needed to be charged, the compressor was weak, metal shaving in the inline filter, an overcharged system and the tranny was clunking ALL from doing a "WALKAROUND" WHILE ON THE PHONE with you. MAYBE, he just might have seen the gouges IF he could walk and talk at the same time, but that's about it. You bought a 8 year old vehicle sight unseen. I'd wonder about the miles. Just remember, IF a car guy's lips are moving, he's lying.

"I had the sales manager walk around the truck and physically look at the truck while I was on the phone."
Who buys a truck over the phone without ever seeing it (much less test driving and having it inspected)? You thought the word of a used car salesman was enough due dilligence to make a large purchase? You really need to change the way you go about buying used vehicles. Your current method sends a signal to the salesman that you are a plumb that is ripe for picking.
Before you go running off to small claims, look over the contract you signed. I'd be willing to bet it says nothing about the vehicle being everything the salesman told you it would be. It probably says exactly the opposite. Something like you are accepting the vehicle "as is" with no implied warranties.
The fact that used car salesmen don't always tell the truth is pretty much common knowledge. Car dealers know this, so they make sure their contracts are written so that the burden of ensure a vehicle's fitness is placed on you. Buying a vehicle sight unseen is just asking to be ripped off.
