Credit to the Iaz Family for the bulk of this article, thank you: My comments are lettered a) b) c)........ The Magic Jack is truly a Magic Joke:

Lets start off by saying Please save yourself the head ache DON'T BUY this product. The entire infomercial looks and sounds great but they don't tell you upfront is that its really not a 30 day trial but rather a 15 day trial cause after 15 days they charge your credit card like they did mine.

a) True, it's only 15 days to return or they charge your card on the 15th day for the full amount plus any shipping charges. It will take you 45+ days to get a credit back.

They don't tell you that if you ever have a problem you WILL NEVER speak to a live representative, cause the company does not have a telephone.

b) True. There is no way to speak to a live customer support representative, it is all web based and they are not the brightest bunch of people.

They don't tell you that they are going to redistribute your personal information to other customers in their database like they did mine.

c) True. Despite the fact that they say your information is not shared it is. Shortly after providing my contact phone number and e-mail address I started receiving random calls from telemarketers and a ton of spam e-mails from various companies that I never personally requested information from. Prior to this I rarely had any spam going to this e-mail address, it is now useless for business purposes without setting a bunch of filters as I now get 150+ spam e-mails a day. I have talked to their online customer service and they totally deny that they sell your information to other companies, imagine that :) !!

They don't tell you up front that in order to have 24/7 phone access your computer can not go into hibernation or be shut off, imagine if you have an emergency at night time when your computer is usually off and don't have access to a phone,? or if you have a burglar and need to contact the police?

d) This one I am not sure there should be a complaint to. It should be known by the virtue of it being a USB based device that if your computer is not fully up and running you will not have access to the phone. I would not rely on this device for any emergency service...ever !!! Keep your cellular phone handy.

When you do call 911 they don't tell you that your actually speaking with a Internet computer and not that of your local police department which by the way you have to be sure you give them all kinds of information Home address, name, phone #,etc) before they even dispatch anyone out to your home. (I don't know about you guys but I have small children, who are to young to memorize this information, and trust them to know that in an emergency they are going to be able to assist this Internet operator to get some help in time? I mean what if something ever happened to mommy or daddy and they needed the police but didn't know the information because their to young to give more information?

e) Not Sure. I have not had to call them for emergency services, but I have read in several posts that this is a big issue. I personally would not rely on them for this service unless you have no choice.

They don't tell you that you can not be on your computer doing work because every time someone in your house picks up the phone or a call comes in a box pops up which you have to minimize, and yes you have to minimize it for every call going out or coming in , trust me its a pain especially when your spouse work is done primarily on the PC, try writing a word, power point, excel, while every 10 seconds you have a box popping up on your working screen.

f) Beyond True. This is by far one of the most annoying features of this service. Every single time you dial out or a call comes in it pops up a box on to your screen and drops you out of whatever program you were working on (be sure to save your work often as it occasionally crashes the program your working in). It says it has a "minimized mode" but it does not work. Also each time you start the service you must reset the volume/headset level (a simple flash chip in the device to remember your settings would have solved this issue.

I don't know about you folks but I wish someone would of told me all this before I spent my time and money buying this product cause now the end result is that I have no product as i sent them back and I have no money cause they have yet to date to issue a refund.....

g) They make it sound great but the Iaz family is 110% correct, do not rely on this as a main phone number for any purpose and to be honest I would also look elsewhere for a more reliable service now that I have experienced the "Magic Joke". After reading several people complain about the 911 service I would never use this phone to speak to an emergency service (fire, police or ambulance/rescue etc..), unless you have no other choice. You will have a much easier time on a cellular phone that has enhanced 911 GPS services which I have had personal experience with.

I guess its true what my dad always told me if something sounds to good to be true 9 out of 10 times it usually is.-Iaz Family, Las Vegas NV Good luck!

h) I also agree, go elsewhere for a more reliable service, you truly get what you pay for. The only positive thing I will say for this company is that the clarity of the phone service is excellent, the rest of it is truly a "Magic Joke" !!! .....The Carroll Family.

It is VOIP !!!! Dont expect it to be an ordinary phone line as it is not, Also if you use it with usb 2.0 you shouldnt have any probs unless your pc is junked up or you got a virus or something!!! i dont have any problems with my Magic Jack . If you understand voip and you understand how it works and if you have full understanding of how your computer works , you will love this product, Read the Terms of service before you buy!!!!! So many complain about things that are addressed in the TOS. For under $20 a year this is phenomenal! ps ...I dont work for them either... I am just a satisfied customer that understands what i bought!!!

Magic Jack outsources its call center

#3UPDATE EX-employee responds

I used to work for a company in San Antonio TX called West Teleservices (www.west.com) they reportedly handle upwards of 90% of the "as seen on TV" ads including Magic Jack. The company Magic Jack does not do their own ordering, west does. As the company Magic Jack states they do not sell your information, they do not, but there is a way for them to lower their (magic jack's) per call handling costs... allow West to collect this information and sell access to the other companies that they service West's, extensive consumer information database... and as magic jack is not taking your order and recording your information they, technically, are not selling your info... by the way, two days after I began working there, I began receiving telemarketing calls on my cell phone and as I had this for some time, and to that date never received a single call from a company in this capacity... I filed complaints with the FCC's Do Not Call List (as it was listed) and was fired a day later for unspecified reasons... I wonder why???
