In the past, I have often used Ripoff Report to choose different companies for jobs that I have needed done. I've found it reliable in almost every instance. However, I happen to know the company that this report is referencing. I found it interesting that when I "googled" McAlister Carpet Company, that the ripoff report is what popped up first. Even more appalling was that it was the report of an apparent crazy man from 2006.
I would like to put forth my own opinions about the company in Palatka, the owners, and the wonderful service that they provide. For starters, I won't tell you how I know the information I do, but trust me that it's all 100% accurate. As far as the customer service at McAlister Carpet goes, there is none that rival it, in any market, especially flooring. Doug Jones personally measures each and every customer that he has. He stays late at work and goes in early to make sure that his customers can be helped whenever it fits their schedules. On more than one occasion, he has gone financially out of his way to make sure that a job is done right. He's even been known to fix problems that he did not create, just to make sure the customer was happy.
The installers at McAlister Carpet have been doing their job longer than almost anyone. They are quick and efficient in their work, and hidden perfectionists. Doug and Kathy Jones have gone out of their way time and time again to make sure that the community believes in what they believe in: a quality job with quality service. Almost anyone you ask will back up that statement. So, for some crazy loon to write a false report on them in Ripoff Report is absurd. There is no one else that I would trust more to be honest and fair than McAlister Carpet Company in Palatka.

We had Mcalister Carpet & Tile of Palatka do a whole house installation for us; over 700 square feet of very expensive wood laminate; over 650 square feet of 20 in. tile; and a bathroom remodel with tile wainscotting and shower surround. Their craftsman were extremely courteous and professional...always showing up when promised and leaving the house cleaned up at the end of each day. The Owner, Doug, was at the job site enough to insure we were satisfied and to check progress. There were no hidden extras or surprises, at all. We left the workmen free and unrestricted access to our home and NOTHING was missing or put of place at the end of the 3 week job. If anyone in the Putnam County area wants a truly professional carpet or tile installation, done on time in an expert craftsman like manner, w/o hidden costs, I whole heartedly recommend McAlister Carpet & Tile.

We did, indeed, do a flooring job for Kathleen Kelly in December 2004. Upon contracting the job with us Ms. Kelly paid a down-payment with the agreement of final payment upon completion and satisfaction of the job. Ms. Kelly is the individual who made down payment and signed the sales invoice. Upon completion of the job, final payment was made and there was no disagreement concerning the job. Several months passed and we had no contact with the customer, then Mr. Jerry Harness began calling our company complaining that he was unhappy with the ceramic job and that nothing had been done correctly. At that time, inspection was made and his complaints found to be unjustified concerning the tile work. Ms. Kelley had chosen tile with a cushioned edge made to imitate stone tile and grouting on this type of tile is not done flush with the top as it takes away from the whole concept of the cushioned tile. Mr. Harness then called in two seperate persons, one from another flooring company here in town and an independent installer and was told by both that there was not a problem with the installation of the flooring purchased. Following this, Mr. Harness began contacting the Carpet Mill, The Better Business Bureau, and an attorney in addition with vulgar, sick, phone calls to our company. The Better Business Bureau and his attorney, after reviewing the conflicting stories, dropped his case. Mr. Harness continued to make harassing phone calls and was repeatedly told that there was not any reasonable explanation for his continued tirades as the job was done properly and was obviously acceptable at the time as no complaint was issued and the job was paid for in full. In March of 2007, Mr. Harness paid a company in Deland Florida to come and look at his flooring and help with his complaint. The only time during this whole fiasco that anyone agreed with Mr. Harness, they were paid to do so. Never, during this entire time, did we hear one single word or complaint from the original customer, Ms. Kathleen Kelley and we actually were confused about Mr. Jerry Harness' anger and viciousness which began so long after the completion of the job. We assumed that this was probably a medical problem and dismissed his ranting and raving as such. However, after five years this man continues to plague us by any means available. We do over one thousand jobs a year, for individuals, businesses and builders and have never had a legitimate complaint that we did not handle immediately. Our reputation has been built on service and honesty however we have been at a loss as to how to handle this individual who is obsessed, not with whether a good job was done or not, but with being able to funnel all of his abuses and anger toward someone for as long as possible. Believe me, had this been a true case of an improper installation, it would certainly have behooved us to handle it immediately. However, it is more a case of a man who is vengeful, spiteful and in need of a "scape-goat" for his anger and this we can not fix for Mr. Harness. Our sympathies go out to Ms. Kelley for having to live with such anger.
