HORROR STORY: I purchased a used vehicle from AutoMax in Febuary 2015 and the car salesman was Scottrell Morris. He spoke very highly of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. I asked to test drive the vehicle, but it was blocked in by other cars, so I wasn't able to move the car. I sat in the car and checked out the inside and looked under the hood - everything looked great - except, the AC wasn't blowing cold air at all. I figured it needed freon - simple fix. Despite this, Scottrell said that if I brought the car back after a couple of days, the dealership would fix it.

Within one hour of talking about the price of the car, it went from $9,000 to $15,000 because the salesman was a complete idiot. I figured the price misquotation was a human error. I gave Scottrell the down payment and he went to the back to process paperwork. Two hours later, he comes back with a price of a little more than $18,000...and with finance charges, it would cost a little more than $21,000. This is for a vehicle that has 96,000 miles on it with no AC.

Anyway, I got the price down to $16,000. After a few days of having the vehicle, Scottrell is nowhere to be found to contact the service department to fix the AC. He successfully tricked me into keeping the car past the return time legally given for automobiles. That summer, I paid $400 to fix the AC and inspect the vehicle for additional issues: the transmission fluid was black, the brake fluid was black, the power steering fluid was grey, the brake calipers all ceased up when the brakes were being replaced, the rotors were rusted from the salt on the streets in NJ where the car came from, and there was an oil leak. After a year and a half of having the car, I owe a little over $10,000 for the vehicle and the AC still doesn't work, despite having it serviced twice, along with other preventative maintenance concerns.

I wouldn't recommend my worst enemy buying a vehicle from AutoMax or dealing with MEI Auto Finance. MEI Auto Finance is the parent company of AutoMax and they will finance the car, but the interest rate will be about 19-21%.

"...it went from $9,000 to $15,000 because the salesman was a complete idiot."   What??? and you agreed to a 75% increase????   Human error on $9 to $15K??    You didn't ask to see another $9K car in your budet?

I am sorry you did NOT fight for yourself at all!   Why were you so easy to roll over?

They sound like real wolves looking for people with poor credit, scared to argue back, so they intimidate, as soon as you gave in on one thing they moved on to the next and next.

What do you mean you didn't get a test drive? Wasn't that a big red flag?

If you were paying 19-20% interest then you probably  have bad credit, and maybe were afraid to fight for ANY rights  on a loan and car that YOU are being charged for.

"...He successfully tricked me into keeping the car past the return time legally given for automobiles."

There is NO right of return on a SOLD car that I know of.  I have heard you can PAY a fat fee (~$400.) for a right to return a used car in 48 hours... usually to have it inspected, but tht is available to you BEFORE purchase in most states.

I'm not even sure there is ANY 'return rights" for all states.

"...That summer, I paid $400 to fix the AC and inspect the vehicle..."  <<< You MUST do this FIRST before you commit. Wasn't $70-$100 inspection cost better than buying this bad decision?

Why didn't you walk away and come back ONLY when the car was able to be driven to YOUR mechanic?  Why trust them at all?

This was a harsh lesson for you...I hope you never roll over again.
