I have a 2009 MB GL Bluetec with less than 50,000 miles and had 100% engine failure. The timing chain broke, the timing chain sprocket splintered into 5 pieces, the cam shafts on 3 cylinders are broken and the rods are bent. MB has told me that it will cost $18,300 to buy a new engine to fix this car. MB has refused to help at all because it's out of warranty. Instead, they'd like to 'get me into a new car'. Anybody else have a problem like this?

I have a 2012 GL 350 Blue-Tec that had engine failure at 41,000 miles. The engine stalled as I was driving it. After being towed to the dealership and inspected, they found that one of the camgears had frozen in place which was not repairable. Luckily it was still under warranty so Mercedes replaced the engine. However, the brand new factory engine goes into the car and instead of coming with a new warranty, Mercedes will only warranty it for the remaining 9,000 miles of the car's original warranty. I understand that would be the case for mufflers, exhaust, etc but why wouldn't Mercedes have enough faith in their factory-built, master-technician installed engine to warranty a new one for the standard 40,000, 5 year term?
