I purchased a computer with a 3 year protection plan ($139.39 + tax) from Micro Center in July of 2012.

I had some issues with my DVD drive, so I took it in for servicing (March 22, 2013).  It took until the following Thursday to get an answer from the technician as to what the problem was.

When he called, he says there is a glitch in the operating software (manufacturer Windows 7).  His only solution was to recover the computer to factory settings (almost anyone is capable of doing this).  By the way, how does that fix a glitch in the operating system?  He's not actually fixing anything; just resetting the system.

Then he proceeds to tell me that software glitches, even in the operating system installed by the manufacturer, are not covered under the warranty.  He tells me that the diagnosis would be $100 and the recovery would be $70.  So what exactly does the warranty cover?  Nothing.  The hardware is covered, but that is controlled by drivers, applications, etc (i.e. software).

I told them not to touch it and I'd do it myself  The only reason I buy warranties is so I don't have to spend my time trying to fix glitches.

It's a scam.  You pay them $140 and they do nothing.  You're better off with the Geek Squad.  I've purchased plenty of computers with warranties from Best Buy.  If something goes wrong, I drop it off and they fix it, even if the problem is some bad application I installed.
