Mike Hawkins contacted me to help him with an immediate need to satisfy a customer's complaint regarding a piece of glass that he wanted made obscure.  I informed him I'd like to help him, but I'd recently had leg/knee surgery, and wasn't able to handle a piece of glass the size of what he had, but if he could get two men to deliver the glass, I could sandblast it.

Two young men brought the glass to me, put it in place so I could do my work, and I did the job.  He did not send payment, though I had given him a price, but it wasn't a big deal, I thought.  After the glass was taken away, for re-installation, I phoned Mike Hawkins to get an e-mail address to which I could send an invoice.  No response.

Subsequent phone calls went to voice mail, if the box wasn't full.  I contacted the company that had brought the glass to me, and found out Mike Hawkins owed them a lot more than he owed me, and they told me they had trouble getting through to him by phone, but I should keep trying.  I then contacted the country club where the glass was installed, and arranged a meeting with the manager.

I was told that the club had problems with Mr. Hawkins paying subcontractors that had done work at the club, but that he had finally paid them.  The manager was scheduled to meet with Mr. Hawkins later that day, and I requested she hand Mr. Hawkins a copy of my bill to him.  She said she would, "if he shows up for the meeting".  I still don't know if that happened, as follow-up phone calls to the manager were not returned.

Mr. Hawkins then phoned me, irate that I had involved his customer, telling me he was bonded, and complaints would hurt his business.  He offered to drive by my place of business, and pay me in cash, adding $24 to my bill, "for my trouble", making it a total of $150.  He didn't show up.  In subsequent phone conversations he

1) told me he was on a job site, to please call back at 2PM, which call went to voice mail, with no response; 2) arranged to meet with me at a specified time and nearby place to pay me; never showed up

3) Asked me to text him my mailing address, so he could "immediately" send me a check, as he was "out of town".  That check never arrived (As happened with a prior check he "sent", after I e-mailed the original bill.)  My original bill was sent the end of April, 2019; it is now five months later.

You may wonder why I've wasted so much time on Mr. Hawkins.  First, I'm still recovering from surgery, so I can't work as I normally do, and have time.  Second, I've been in business for 50 years, and I'm "old school":  I don't like liars and cheats.  The amount I'm out is a small amount, and my out-of-pocket loss is minimal.  I still don't like cheats, and Mr. Hawkins is a textbook example of a lack of any ethics in business.

Yesterday, out-of-the-blue, I received a phone call from the owner of BPM Construction, Inc.  He apologized for the non-payment, and explained the problem was caused by miscommunication between his office and subcontractors.  We arranged to meet this morning, and he handed me a check to pay me in full for the invoice.
