Hi Laura, I don't know what the legalities are in your state, but it might be worth your while to check into them. I have often heard that if a creditor refuses payment then your debt is settled. For instance, although you were not able to make the minimum required payment, you were at least sending something. And by them sending back your checks uncashed, they were refusing payment. My mother lives on a fixed income and has some outstanding medical bills. She sends in $5 at a time, and so far none have been refused. She was also told that if any of them ever sent back uncashed checks that was like refusing to accept the payment and in that case she would owe nothing. My condolences to you about your child.
