I bought a vehicle in April of 2015 from a used car dealer. I was given temporary tags until the permanent ones were to arrive and I paid the registration fees and any other fees into the total price of the vehicle.
Got a letter and phone call from the used car dealer that I had an outstanding balance in an insurance lapse from 2008. Probably from the truck I sold, perhaps the guy didn't register it? I don't know, but I sold it, so obviously I didn't need insurance.
Temporary tags on the used vehicle I purchased are about to expire, just as the dealership suddenly goes out of business. The dealer says he'll send my paperwork to the MVA. I get to the MVA, the guy prints me out a piece of paper with my name and someone else's name that I knew back in 2002. The 'screen view' shows two names and two different account numbers.
Mine shows a figure of $1244.88 and underneath it $862.17. Shows nothing about what they are except on one of the lines it says "Mva Insurance Lapse." The date is 7-23-08, over 7 years ago. It also shows the other person, and I have no idea why, with a different account number and the same "Mva Insurance Lapse" with the amount of $2964.78.
He proceeds to give me a screen shot of her accounts and all her lapses which total $4499.58 from 03-13-2002, 10-15-03 and 04-04-05. My name is nowhere on this paper, nor my account. What does this girl's stuff have to do with what they're claiming I owe?
Now they won't let me register the vehicle until this $7000 is paid off...how am I supposed to get in touch with this other person and why should I even have to? MVA is claiming I owe from 2008 and this girl who is somehow on my account owes from 2002. Isn't there some kind of statute of limitations, and why am I just now hearing about this? If I truly owed this much, collections could have found me in the past 7-12 years!
So now they are withholding the registration from me.
