Carrie, This is the oldest scam in the book. NEVER provide ANY information to ANY debt collection agency. NEVER do this!! This is a ploy to get information from you to validate the debt or create bogus documents. The entire burden of proof is on the collector to prove that you owe the debt. It is never your responsibility to prove that you don't. A simple "debt validation" request is all it takes as per the provisions of the FDCPA. Sent by certified mail, return reciept requested. Put the certified # on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records. Read some of the many reports on debt collections here on ROR for more info.
