I recently was taken to court for an old debt. I had 4 old credit card accounts that I stopped paying in 2003. I decided to see if I could pay the other ones off.

I called Capitol One, who was one of the accounts and when I put in my account number I was transferred to Nelson, Watson & Associates. A person got on the phone who said he was the office supervisor and I explained to him that I wanted to try to reach a settlement on this account.

He was very rude to me and said that I was trying to buy a house or something and had to pay him off. I told him that wasn't true. I offered him 2500.00 to satisfy the account. It was originally $5,000.00 but with interest it was up to $10,000.00.

He laughed and said when I wanted to pay $5,000.00 to call him back and he hung up on me.

A few days later he called me and offered to settle for $6,950.00. I said you offered me $5,000.00 and I offered you $2,500.00 already. He said how about $4,000.00 and I said no.

A few days later I got a letter from them saying that I had agreed to $6,950.00 and I was to send the money. That was a lie. I am afraid at some later time they may take me to court and say that I agreed to that amount and make me look bad in front of the judge.

Ronald, if you could, please post the language from the letter you received. I may be able to ease your mind about it, or at least offer you some advice as to recourse. You should also immediately send a letter back to this outfit, preferably by certified mail with return receipt, telling them that you never accepted their offer of $6900.
