Netgear's lifetime warranty is all smoke and mirrors. Technical service is their money maker. They offered a $79 service plan for six months for a $79 unit. The charge would include a firmware update as well as support for other computer products that may or may not be Netgear products as well as spyware removal services. Many products not related to my non-working router. If this update did not fix the router I have the option of getting a replacement. If I wanted to upgrade from standard shipping, I could pay $16 or $29 depending in the speed of service. I could spend over $100 to take advantage of the lifetime warranty on a $79 router. The router is a Netgear N600 purchased in July 2011.
