I joined New York Fitness in April of 2006 my membership was for a year. I though I cancelled but they said i didn't so they kept taking money out of my account. I didn't notice for a long time because my husband was very ill and in the hospital part of 2007 and most of 2008 and died in Feburary of 2009. How am I suposed to think about a fitness membership when all of that was going on.

They can't do much for there members to try and bring them back into the club but they can continue to take there money how fair is that. They need to change some of there policies. Then to add to this insult I had to pay another 29.99 to cancell this membership.I am very angry about all of this, how much can a postcard cost to tell a member that they miss them coming into the club and try and get them to come back. As long as there getting there money they don't.

Fitness clubs are notorius for automatic renewals

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. It is very difficult when you are dealing with a long term illness.

I don't want to come across as uncaring, but what I don't understand is how someone can deduct funds from your bank account every month for four (4) years without you noticing it on your statements. You gave the fitness club your account number for montly automatic drafts and they obviously have a policy of automatic renewals. IMO auto renewals ought to be banned, but they are not. Check your contract with the fitness club, the policy will be stated somewhere in the fine print of the contract.

It is your responsibility to look out after your own funds. There are many reasons to check your bank statements monthly: to balance your account and to see if there are unauthorized charges are two of the main reasons. If you find it difficult to watch your statements, then don't give others access to your account. You give them access when you give your account number for automatic drafts. Make sure you cancel with them and get it in writing. Fitness club memberships are especially difficult to cancel. If you don't have it in writing, they can 'accidently' start withdrawing funds from your account again....be careful.
