We were tempted to switch our electric power provider to a 3rd party (North American Power) after several solicitations came to our house promising lower rates than our local provider - and we had heard several ads on the radio. We switched in summer 2014 to a "fixed rate" of a little less than our default/home provider (at the time, the fixed rate was between $.08 and $.09 / kWh). After our "introductory rate" expired, they jacked the rate to over $.18/ kWh. Our home provider's (PSNH AKA EverSource) current rate is $.1056. When I opened my January 2015 bill on January 29, I nearly fell off my chair as it was almost twice that of the highest bill I have ever paid for electricity in 8 years at my house. I noticed that our electricity use in Janaury was signficantly less than our December usage, yet our bill was more than $100 higher. It wasn't until I called PSNH that I understood that our rate had been creeping up for the last 3 months. After I called North Amr Power today, they said they would give me a fixed 8-month contract of $.11 and refund me the difference (only for January - not December or February). They "gave" me that rate on almost the same date that I recieved yet another solicitation to my home from North Am Power for a rate of $.0989! I can't give one more cent to such a shady company and have decided to switch back to my home provider. The North Am Pwr BBB rating, come to find out, is a D. I wish I had done my homework in advance. In the end, the net cost to my family over about 10 months will be approximately $450 - that's $450 MORE than what I would have paid had I stayed with my home provider, after taking account of the tiny savings we received in summer 2014.
