In June of 2001 My wife gave me her ticket to go back to Cleveland, Ohio From Greenville, Sc to get our things because we had just bought a house here. In SC I checked in, I wasnt asked for ID, he just verified the ticked and sent me on my way. I then proceeded to board the plane and handed the ticket taker my ticket and let me on the plane. There was a stop in Memphis to change planes, I ran to the next plane and gave them my ticket and was denied to get on because it was my wifes plane ticket. Needless to say i missed that plane, had to pay for a hotel and they made me buy a new ticket which cost somewhere around $600.

To make a long story short, they should have never let me on the first plane if i was not allowed to use my wifes ticket. So they strand me on THEIR mistake and made me shell out 700+ dollars. Thats some racket they have going there. I think the total we are out inc. hotel and the old ticket is around $900 that we didnt have. I have just recieved their last email saying that they dont want to hear anything else from me. Well, now im gonna get louder!

This is not the guy who needs to learn to read..

First of all to all of you who say this guy needs to learn to read and all of the 9/11 comments - PLEASE READ THE DATE THAT THIS HAPPENED - it was prior to 9/11. Second it would seem that Northwest is fully at fult here because when he booked the flights he was using this ticket as a form of payment for his reservation. Even if it was under the same res I would think he would have mentioned this to the res agent. Secondly at least two employees let him get on the plane with this ticket - the ticket counter agent who saw the ticket and the gate agent where he started.

I feel better that Northwest DIDN'T let you board the plane

After reading this I am a little hesitant about flying Northwest, but then again, some people do their jobs others don't. In the end I feel better that Northwest DIDN'T let you board the plane again. It make me feel a tad more safe about flying.

You shouldn't be whinning and telling everyone else how YOU screwed up in the first place. Next time, fly a different airline and for heavens sakes read a little something!

After Sept 11th, anyone who thinks they can use someone elses plane ticket, is an idiot!!

This complaint has no merit. Yes the first employee shouldn't have let you on, but the tickets clearly state nobody else can use them. I find it hard to believe he didn't ask for ID as security is soooo strict nowadays. He must have been new maybe. I have flown several times since 9/11 and constantly get asked for my ID and birth certficiate when I travel to Mexico or Canada.

No sympathy from the devil here.

Sounds good. He should have probably realized that he ought to check it out with the airline before heading to the airport. Most likely he could have gotten the ticket changed no problem. It is possible he could have even done it right at the airport.

However, in this case, telling him to learn to read and taking on that attitude really hits home with what is wrong with the airlines in this country. If he should learn to read, so should you, because you as an airline allowed him to take part of the trip in the first place. He's not the only person who didn't read something here, guy.

Second, your attitude about it stinks. He is a paying customer, not your vendor who should just take your attitude and put up with it and thank God you exist in the first place. I think the airlines have forgotten who pays them the way they treat customers these days. And that is a mistake that only continued corporate welfare will allow them to survive in times like these. Who wants to fly you nowadays? I sure don't. I avoid you like the plague. I will drive before I will ever fly again. This is from a former frequent flier. Unless you continue to have people in power who throw more billions of our tax dollars at you while you lay off thousands, do you really think you are going to survive in the long run with irate customers?

I would think that in everyone's interests, they could have just allowed him to continue at that point, since they made the mistake of letting him start the trip in the first place. Your READ title is sure apt here, it's just that the airline ought to do it too. And they should have made it right. I feel they didn't. And I feel that your outlook as customer "service" is lacking, when you find a way to blame the customer for YOUR mistake.

So, the next time the airlines post a loss, I'm sure you will claim it's the d**n customers who are to blame or the terrorists, or something like that, but you certainly won't admit that lousy service from your company has anything to do with it. But as you are pointing the fingers of blame, take a good look in the mirror, because in the end it comes down to you.

#7UPDATE EX-employee responds

As a former employee of Northwest and United Airlines, I can safely say that not only did you deserved to be stranded, but by rights the airline could have had you arrested for traveling under a false identity. It clearly states, only the person to which the ticket was issued can use it, it also tells you that you can not bring a bomb on board, I hope you are not a total git. If you punch a cop on the side of the highway you can't complain when they pull your licencse because you did not read on the back, that it could be suspended. Use your head and stop wasting everyones time by crying like a twit. Save this space for real complaints.

although it is unfortuante what happened to you, why didn't you look into the rules of using someone else's ticket before you decided to head out for the airport? i would think that you would call the airline to see what their rules are concerning using a ticket with someone else's name. i work for an airline and can tell you that especially now, a passenger could never check in for a flight using a ticket that was intended for someone else. you're right about them leaving you stranded. they should have never let you on the first plane. however, you have to take on SOME responsibility.
