This criminal credit card scam is facilitated by the compromise of your credit card number and personal information. The criminals: 1. Acquire your personal and financial information; 2. Place an online, or brokered, subscription in you name to Scientific American magazine; 3. Bill your now compromised credit card using the transaction description - NPG*SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN800-333-1199 NY . 4. The fraudulent billing charge is several times the actual subscription cost of the magazine subscription. The scammers previously placed subscription to Scientific American Magazine then arrives during the payment window for your credit card bill. The receipt of the actual magazine in conjunction with the fraudulent credit card billing is a deception intended to induces your thinking that Scientific American magazine has made an error in the charge, or the subscription, or both.

The false premise compels your belief that you need to contact Scientific American for credit or reversal of the unwanted charge, or to file a dispute with your credit card company. The correct action is to immediately contact your credit card provider and report your credit card number and personal information has been stolen and used for a fraudulent charge, and have your credit card replaced with a new card. This fraud is aimed at every one, but especially the elderly who may not understand the ramifications of inaction, delay, or misdirected inquires regarding fraudulent credit card charges.
