Thank God for this website.  I was called by a very fast talking man that told me Peak Communications was taking over Verizon's long distance service, and was offering much lower rates because Verizon was trying to keep its customers.  All sounded good.  He told me about how I'm being changed all sorts of charges right now that would be eliminated when the switch was made.  It sounded more like a courtesy call than anything.  Then I got the since he was about to ask for something.  Next thing you know I am in one of those verification services confirming I am who I am and that I am agreeing to switch over my service.  I realize that this guy had just dooped me.  When I realized that he wasn't Verizon, I asked them to stop so I could confirm the charges he said I was paying were in fact true.  Then I asked if I called Verizon and asked them who Peak Communications was, what would they say.  Of course they said they would say everything he had said.  So I said, would you mind holding for 2 minutes while I call them on my cell to confirm this is all on the up and up and he said he would have to hang up and they would call back after Verizon sends them the email that its a go ahead.  That sounded shady, as he would have no problem staying on the phone with me for 10 minutes to sell me this, but wouldn't wait for 2 minutes for me to confirm what he was saying.  I told him no thanks and good bye.  I then called Verizon and they said they hadn't heard of Peak Communications and definitely don't ever change your service over without calling them first to confirm that changing it wouldn't affect my account adversly.  The thing is, I have a bundle, and according to the Verizon rep, switching my phone service over, which according to the bundle is all but free, it would cause my bundle to cancel and I would begin paying for the individual cost of my internet and cable.  On top of that, the $5.95 they charge is just base, then they charge $0.065 / minute of long distance, which in my plan, I pay no per minute charges, it is one time bundle price only, with unlimited.  So if my cell went down and I had to start using the land line, my charges would be astronomical!

Don't Do It!!!  Stop, ask questions, and if your gut starts to smell a rat, listen to your gut.  Its always right!

I just received a similar call & I felt something wasn't right when the lady strated talking about charges per minute. I don't pay per minute with Verizon. So I told her to call me back on Monday. Lol, we'll see if she does.
