September 01, 2003 traded our Isuzu Rodeo in for a Kia Sedona. Salesmen Adam & Daniel informed us that they called our previous leasing company, Wells Fargo (WF) and obtained the payoff figure.

We asked both Adam and Daniel two times if they contacted WF and they said yes. I asked, "And this will get us out of the lease we're in?" We were told yes.

We were presented with the figures and signed the paperwork and drove off in our new van.

Three weeks later I received a collections notice from WF Leasing on the Isuzu. Surely it had crossed in the mail and they have received payment from Peoria Kia. I called Wells Fargo and no, they had not received any payment and that I was turned over to collections. I informed them that we traded the car into Peoria Kia, however that was of no help to them, I am the responsible party for the Rodeo as far as they are concerned (understandably).

I contacted Craig at Peoria Kia, and his comment to me was, "Has anyone from here called you yet?". I told him no. Well, apparently the payoff for the Isuzu was approximately $4800 more than they 'figured'. Although being told previously at the sale they called WF, now they apoligize, they did not in fact call, they used their 'best guess'. We were responsible for the difference, to try to add it to our new loan, or pay the difference. If we didn't pay the difference we would be taken to court.

We explained that we wanted no part of the deal, that we will come in to pick up the Rodeo and give them back the van. First they tried to 'find' the Rodeo and then they informed us that the Rodeo was sold showing an invoice to another no-name dealership.

How can they sell a vehicle they hadn't even paid for?? They told us, "Well we can, if there's an intent to pay..."

After much hagling with Jim Henry, Sales Mgr. the only way we could get WF satisfied was to go in and sign a new finance contract adding just over $1000 to our original figure. Several days after this, they paid WF.

Scam artists amongst Peoria Kia?

I had a similiar incident. I purchased a new rio at Peoria.. salesman called me at work and said I was "already approved". I picked up my new car and was done in an hour.. ONE MONTH later they call me saying I wasn't approved and would have to pay another $250.00 month or bring the car back!!! I brought the car back, needless to say 3 hours later I was in the same Rio and the payment was raised only by $10.00... It was the worst car buying experience I have ever had or hope to have. I will NEVER recommend Peoria Kia nor will I buy any other vehicles there.

Kia's finance people may have done that to you but I have to say that I had a wonderful experience with them. I baught a used Mitsubishi Lancer 2003 and the whole process was painless and great and they even gave me an 8% interst rate and I was a first time buyer. I really feel for you but this stuff happens to people no matter what dealership they go to. Its the consumers responsibility to hold their vehicle till there is a check in hand to pay off theif finance company and even communicate with their finance company before giving the vehicle up to make sure all is well and that they had been contacted with your intent to sell. Good luck on your next vehicle purchase.. and please dont rite off kia.. it only takes one bad sales man to ruin the bunch... also the sales manager is a woman now and she is AWSOME!

Lease Co.'s have different payoff for dealerships

Thanks for your response. In fact, Wells Fargo gave me the total payoff figure after we discovered the problem. It was $2000 higher than the figure they gave to the dealership. The lease company (WF) has a different payoff figure for the dealership than the private party (us). From what I gathered at that time they negotiate with the dealerships, so even if we had called, the figure could very well have been more, as it was 3 weeks later. Believe me, we learned our lesson. They're just one more dealership to add to my list of scumbags.

Please understand, I absolutely detest fraud and deception in the car business which seems to be over populated by the slime and scum of the earth. I also detest consumers who don't seem to know what they are doing. Why on earth did YOU not call WF to find out what the payoff was? How do you know this car dealer was telling you the truth? If you don't know the details, how can you make any reasonably intelligent decision about a deal? Now onto this whole business of CAR FLEECING. Why do you think the dealer is offering you such a "wonderful" deal? He wants to win the Rotary Club "Man of the Year Award"? He's made so-o-o- much money in the past he's willing to "give back to the community"? Maybe he's had a religious experience and as part of his repentance he wants to let you in on an exclusive "executive style" deal. No, the truth is the dealer wants you into a CAR FLEECE because its NOT a good deal! Its a FANTASTIC deal...for him! No matter how fantastic they make it sound, a car lease is a car FLEECE and guess who gets sheared? Your insurance goes up, you pay horrendous official sounding fees and on and on it goes. Never, ever get involved in such a convoluted, garbage deal again. Car dealers love a CAR FLEECE because there's much more profit for them. Guess who pays that extra profit?
