I am so unbelievably happy that I found this website, all of your stories helped me see the light. What the heck was I thinking anyway???
First off, I must start my story by saying that my husband and I both make over $150K combined each year. We both have BS degrees and work in technical fields. Sounds good right? Neither of us were really worried about making more money, we were, and are, pretty happy, but like 95% of Americans (or so Primerica claims) we have a few credit cards, luckily our debt is under 10K, but we also have a mortgage and a student loan to pay off. Sounds like most typical Americans right? So when our mortgage broker brought Primerica to us, stating that we could consolidate everything and make two payments per month it sure sounded good. But let me tell you something, the whole reason they come to your house, late at night, is not really to sell you the package, sure it helps, but the truth is, they want YOU to be a recruit. Boy did I fall for the pitch they were throwing at us.
So we sit through the presentation and go over our finances and talk about the mortgage, which is the whole reason we contacted our mortgage broker. After discussing that they quickly went into the term life insurance and boy do they ever make that sound appealing. We quickly signed up for that thinking it was a great deal. So after we finished I was invited to an "open house". I asked what happened at one of these events, but was not really given an answer. I thought, what the heck I'll see what it's about. After all, our Primerica Rep. keep gloating about how their company has made it into all the 'money' magazines and Wall Street Journal. Sounds great, right?
Next step, I look at the Primerica website because my recruit recommended it. I take a look, and it all looks pretty good. Then a few days later my rep arranges to pick me up and take me to the open house. Strange, why would he drive 30 min. out of his way just to give me a ride? I take it as a kind gesture and accept.
We arrive and I shake a few hands and then sit down for a presentation, still not knowing what the heck I am in for. WHOA - I couldn't believe how exciting and motivating all the speakers were. It just sounded too good to be true! I continue to listen to the psycho-babble and then immediately following I am given an IBA (application) and am asked to fork over $199. I'm thinking 'what the heck?' I was never told I would have to sign up tonight and when asked if I could take the app. home and discuss this with my husband I was abruptly told 'no'. My rep. said "what is there to discuss with him?". First off, let me just tell the general public that my husband and I share all money acquired no matter what and neither of us make a financial decision without the other's consent. I was shocked by their response to me wanting to talk to him first. HELLO - that's red flag #1 (it's probably like #3 or 4, but I am a little naive and usually give people the benefit of the doubt).
Ok, so I sign up that night and then we go out to eat and I talk to another woman who's been doing it for 2 months. Oh man, she is excited which fires me up, but when asked how she gets recruits she explains that she goes to the mall or makes cold calls. I'm thinking, what the heck - I HAVE A FRIGGIN' DEGREE!! I'm not going to make cold calls, as is I hate it when people call me trying to sell something, why would I do the same? And for all of you out there that don't think a degree matters, YES it does!
So the next step was to go to the orientation meeting where an RVP continues the psycho-babble about how you complete the 90 day checklist. I mention to her that I am new to the area and don't know anyone, and I sure the hell am not going to give up my friends or family info. YET! She quickly says, "don't worry, we'll help you with that". Ok I think! I sit through that meeting and mind you I did not want to go because it was Sunday night and that's the best night for TV. Afterwards, I see everyone hugging and giving kisses on the cheek - and I am seriously thinking that this is weird. Actually, I'm starting to really feel like I'm joining a cult!
I go home that night and mind you, my rep. and his wife have been seriously pressuring us to fill out the home loan app. However, my husband is not as naive as me and is holding off - good thing for that. So by now it is Monday morning and this all started on Wednesday night the week before. I decide that it is time I did some research about this 'too good to be true' scam. And thank goodness I did cause I found this website! What a headache saver.
I am truly sorry that so many people got scammed, especially the girl who kept getting late charges. I do have to say that my father in law had a Citi bank credit card a few years back and he always received late fees even though he always paid on time. Well, the secret is, they don't process the payment until a few days after it is received, therefore making it late - WHAT A JOKE!
Let me rap this up by saying that I stopped payment on all the checks Monday morning and I even closed the bank account. Sounds like a hassle, but I seriously want nothing to do with these crooks. And when I forwarded this link to the reps. wife she thanked me but simply replied, and I directly quote: "However, this to me is not a legitimate site and people, especially if they are trying to vent and already have credit issues, maybe even a competitor trying to get a client reved up and convince them to post things. I prefer to go to Money Magazine, Wall street journal, fortune 500, Forbes."
LOL, is she brainwashed or what? Doesn't she realizes that those magazines only represent the 5% of Americans that don't have debt and that this website represents the other 95% that do???? Plus, who knows how much Primercia/Citigroup pays to have articals posted in these mags. The truth is, we all need to learn from each other's mistakes and this website has done just that.
Final note - tell all of your kids "STAY IN SCHOOL"!
