My account had become past due because of my unemployment status. They sent into a collection agency to collect the funds. I finally was able to transfer the funds due to bring the balance to zero and close the account. This was three+ years ago.
I had received one phone call from the collection agency, about a year later, that I still owed the money and they were looking to collect.
I told them I had transfered the funds to my account and payed the balance. The collection agency told me to contact Providian to find out what went wrong. I called about ten numbers that were suppose to bring me to someone to talk to.
And I could not reach a live person. I could not return the collection agency's phone call because it was only an out going line. The agency never called back. I thought it was resolved. Now I just recently received a call from a law firm saying that I need to pay this amount now or risk being sued.
I told them the story ,they wanted physical proof. But because it was so long ago I no longer have the records. I also recall during the time period inbetween that Providian was in legal trouble because of over charging accounts. I never persued because my account was closed, or so I thought.
