DGL Licorice Extract 380 mg Chewable, Item #004528 is for heartburn. It works, but not at the recommended dosage of 3/day. I needed to be taking 20/day (7.6 g) to get relief.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) article Reduction of Serum Testosterone in Men by Licorice (N Engl J Med 1999; 341:1158October 7, 1999DOI: 10.1056/NEJM199910073411515) 7g of licorice reduced testosterone from 740 to 484 ng/ml in their test group, a very serious reduction. That is about the dose I was taking. From my own lab tests my free testosterone dropped by over 50%.
The Puritan page for DGL (http://www.puritan.com/puritans-pride-brand-0102/dgl-licorice-extract-380-mg-chewable-004528?scid=35390) contains no warning of such serious side effects.
I added a customer review of DGL to warn prospective purchasers, but they refused to publish it.
I returned 26 bottles for a refund and have never gotten a refund as of 01/26/16. I have proof of delivery on 01/05/16. Despite spending 1/2 hour on the phone last week and getting assurances of a refund of $86.58 I still do not have it.
Puritan needs to be honest with their male customers and warn them of the possible danges of their licorice and they certainly need better customer service so people can get their refunds.
Also note that the customer reviews may not be reliable, as they refused to publish my negative review.
