Rapid Filing Services, LLC - PriorTax.com - RapidTax.com Aka Rapid Tax And Financial Services Failed to Provide Prior Tax Documents as advertised Woodside New York

On Friday May 23, 2008, I was searching for a way to quickly obtain a transcript of my 2006 tax returns for a home purchase. I came upon the website "http://priorTax.com" through paid google advertising.

A quick check of the website revealed that they could get my tax transcripts the same day if I submitted the request by their cutoff time. They charged a fee of $29.99 for the service. The IRS offers the same service for free but it takes up to two weeks to receive the information.

I checked around the internet and there were several sites offering the service for the same time and around the same price. I was wary that it might be a scam so I checked the web for any successful stories from the website. I found stories where people had gotten their refunds and where at least one other person obtained tax records from the website. I also found a physical business address and real phone number so I thought they were legitimate.

I decided to go ahead and get the information. I paid my money and completed all the required forms including a power of attorney for purposes of obtaining tax information. The power of attorney had a legitimate licensed CPA listed and it matched up with the information I had already obtained so I submitted the information.

One of the items requested was my AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) from a prior year's tax return. It stated this was necessary for a third party to obtain the tax records. I gave them an AGI directly off a tax return I was holding in my hand.

A few hours later, I went back to the website to retrieve my information. The website showed the information was "available soon" and I had a message from someone named "Michelle." The message stated that the IRS had rejected my request for information because I provided the wrong AGI.

I confirmed that the AGI I provided was for the correct tax year and they had the right number. I then contacted the IRS to check for accuracy. The IRS confirmed my information was correct. The lady that answered the phone also seemed surprised that a company was providing this service on the internet.

I went back to the http://www.priortax.com website and logged in. The website advertised "live chat" during business hours. I typed a message in the live chat window to try and talk to someone and received no response. I did this for several times over multiple days and never received one single response.

I called the number I had for rapidtax.com on Monday or Tuesday and got a live person on the phone. They told me they were resubmitting my request and would post it on the site when available. It has been at least two days since then and I still receive no information and they still fail to respond to online chat attempts. In addition, my prior chat attempts have all been conveniently deleted from the record.

I did some follow-up investigation on the company. They do seem to be a legitimate tax accounting company. However, I have located numerous complaints online about people not receiving services in the time-frame advertised or only receiving partial services.

I have notified them via written email that I am revoking all of my power of attorney documents and authorizations to obtain any tax information on me. However, if you read the fine print of their contract, they require dual notification (email and certified letter) to terminate a business relationship.

I would be extremely cautious about doing business with these people. I still don't know if they intend to refund my money. Fortunately, I paid with credit card and will dispute via that route if they don't.

I was contacted by the business in reference to my report here. They agreed to provide a full refund due to my experience. The full refund showed up the day after their phone call. They also have posted a response that says they will be fixing their online communication process.

Hello Joe. First of all, we're sorry that you were frustrated with the live chat interface. Due to communication breakdown on that system, we will be upgrading it for the next tax season. You did reach us easily by telephone and email, and we did attempt to fulfill your form retrieval request on May 23 and on May 27. On May 27, 2008 we wrote "Hello Joseph, we attempted to retrieve your forms using the 2007 and 2002 AGI however both attempts were rejected by the IRS. It is possible these figures haven't been updated on the appropriate systems of the IRS or your birth date may be invalid (##/##/####)...". We sometimes cannot retrieve the documents for reasons such as incorrect birthday or AGI etc. In most cases, the onus is on the customer to provide the correct information, and that's why we have a partial refund policy. After reviewing your case, however, it appears that you were duly diligent in providing the correct information, and the error was likely an IRS server issue. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we issued you a full refund. Best Regards, Bill, General Manager
