Good financial management, disclipine not to spend money you don't have and knowing how to qualify for social services programs for your kids will put and keep food on the table for them. With kids comes a LOT of responsibility --and I didn't hear any mention of a husband. HE needs to be contributing to the support of the kids. Mamma didn't make them kids alone! This bank works like ALL banks work. Someone needs to explain to you how banks work. I don't know why anyone would even want a bank account anyway! My grandparents told me about what banks did during the 1930s Depression and this would be the LAST place I would want to put my money. You shouldn't be writing checks for items under $10 because of the fees associated with this! That is fiscal IRRESPONSIBILITY! YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PAY CASH! This is all explained in the literature they give you when you open your bank account. BANKS ARE IN BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY. THEY DON'T GIVE A d**n ABOUT YOU AND IF YOU DON'T REALLY PAY ATTENTION AND UNDERSTAND HOW THEY WORK, THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU. YOU MESSED UP. YOU NEED MORE EDUCATION IN FINANCIAL MATTERS FOR SURE.

You admit it yourself. The fees are justified.

Where did the bank rip you off? "My account went into the negative, I deposited the money needed quickly to avoid overdraft fees. Instead of taking the credit before the debit, they did it the other way around. Then charged me $175 worth of overdraft fees for 5 items all under $10. I deposited another $340 this morning thinking they would have taken the credit before the debit, so now I have lost that money as well." That's how it works. You can't kite items these days anymore. If you spend money from your checking account, then it is gone. You cannot beat the money to the bank. I would recommend getting a check register and tracking your purchases or you will have this same problem at whatever bank you go to. Banks ALWAYS post debits before credits. That's how the system works. Never spend money until the bank has credited your account or you will rack up fees. "Two weeks ago, I called because a company took an unauthorized payment from my account, they told me it would be 7-10 business days for them to review it, and suggested I call the company. I did so, the next day regions refunded $130 into my account, the day after that so did the company. I didn't realize it at first, until the money was gone (bad on my part), but I called to be sure they could wait to take it back in 2 days when I got my paycheck, (stupid on my part) sorry ma'am we have to take it back right now, I didn't have the money in the account for them to take it back, so I got charged overdraft fees for them taking it back, and for everything else that hadn't posted yet. Seriously how long would it have taken them to realize and research it? Probably another 2 days, thats what I get for trying to be an honest customer." So, you got a double credit to your account and then spent money that was not yours. You expect the bank to go ahead and let you keep their money until you can get paid to cover spending money that was not yours. Why would the bank do this? The unauthorized payment was not their fault, the double credit was not their fault, you spending money you shouldn't have spent was not their fault, and you want to place all the blame on the bank? I agree that these overdraft fees are insane. They are way too expensive. I had it happen to me once and I keep track of my purchases now so it will never happen again.
