I contracted to purchase a Maine Coon Cat from Karon Hansberger of Reigning Cats on 8/21/07. The kitten was picked up at the breeders home 9/18/2007 and taken to the vet on 9/19/07 for a wellness check and completion of vaccinations. As part of the examination, a stool specimen was provided. The lab work was done by Antech Labs and as part of the lab work an ELISA test was done for parasites and was found positive for Girardia. The breeder was notified but made no efforts to assist or make good on the treatment. Giardia is highly contagious and the kitten had to be isolated from my other two cats. Under veterinary care, the kitten was started on treatment but did not respond either to the treatment and the sterile care that was necessary to prevent reinfection. Additional tests were done 10/27/07 at Antech Labs and found still positive for Giardia. I took to kitten to a second vet for another opinion on 10/29/07 and the vet was in agreement on the treatment and with the suspicion that there was another problem (i.e. weakened immune system). Remaining tests were completed on 11/09/07 and the kitten was still positive for Giardia. The kitten was returned to the breeder with the statement that the terms of the contract had not been met. The breeder wanted to self treat the kitten and on 11/10/07, I advised the breeder that I would not allow a contagious animal to be returned to my home. The breeder took it upon herself to self medicate and I was contacted on 12/10/07 that she wanted me to pick up the kitten by 12/14/07 because she was receiving guests for the holidays and had no place to keep the kitten. There were no substantiating documents or lab tests to confirm that the kitten was cured. On 12/11/07, I advised the breeder that I would not risk spread of a parasite to my other cats and the kitten would not be welcomed back into my home. Throughout this, my cats had already come down with similar symptoms and had to be treated, carpeting had to be steamed cleaned to destroy any remaining parasites. My total costs came to $1,388 for the kitten's care, treatment of my cats plus clean-up to prevent any contamination in the household. I have a complete documentation plus pictures of how the kitten was raised. The breeder has never offered any compensation.

I contracted to purchase a Maine Coon Cat from Karon Hansberger of Reigning Cats on 8/21/07. The kitten was picked up at the breeder's home 9/18/07 and taken to the vet on 9/19/07 for a wellness check and scheduling completion of vaccinations. As part of the examination, a stool specimen was provided. The lab work was done by Antech Labs and as part of the lab work an ELISA test was done for parasites and was found positive for Girardia. The breeder was notified but made no efforts to assist or make good on the treatment. Giardia ishighly contagious and the kitten had to be isolated from my other two cats. Under veterinary care, the kitten was started on treatment but did not respond either to the treatment and the sterile care that was necessary to prevent reinfection. Additional tests were done 10/27/07 at Antech Labs and found still positive for Giardia. I took the kitten to a another vet for a second opinion on 10/29/07 and the vet was in agreement on the treatment and with the suspicion that there was another problem (i.e. weakened immune system). Remaining tests were completed on 11/09/07 and the kitten was still positive for Giardia. Understand that besides being contagious, Giardia causes foul smelling, loose movements. The kitten was returned to the breeder with the statement that the terms of the contract had not been met. The breeder wanted to self treat the kitten and on 11/10/07, I advised the breeder that I would not allow a contagious animal to be returned to my home. The breeder took it upon herself to self medicate and I was contacted on 12/10/07 that she wanted me tp pick up the kitten by 12/14/07 because she was receiving guests for the holidays and had no place to keep the kitten. There were no substantiating documents or lab tests offered or supplied to confirm that the kitten was cured. On 12/11/07, I advised the breeder that I would not risk spread of this parasite to my other cats and the kitten would be be welcomed back into my home. Throughout this, my cats had already come down with similiar symptoms and had to be treated, carpeting had to be steamed cleaned to destroy any remaining parasites/cysts. My total costs came to just of $2,100 for the kitten's care, treatment of my cats plus clean-up to prevent any contamination in the household. I have complete documentation plus pictures of how the kitten was raised. The breeder has never offered any compensation. Presumably, the kitten was sold or given to someone else.
