I have a family member who has been in the rent to own industry for 10 years. He moved up through the Rent-A-Center ranks to management and was happy with the moves, transfers, etc it took to "reach" his goal. Yes they work many hours with little or no gratitude, but he was/is a good manager treating his employees with respect. The RTO industry is not easy and I doubt that unless you're corporate, you never have days of taking it easy. He had nose bleeds, high blood pressure, stomach problems--all in the name of working for the company. 10 years later and at a different RTO company, many hours of work, moves, pay cuts and downsizing, they now must "part ways". Here is a young man with an outstanding work ethic for "the company" without a job and a new baby. Folks, if you're working for RTO think twice. There are "clicks", back stabbers and -0- loyalty when it comes to the hard work and hours that you put in for your pay check.

...people try to twist what people write to fit their own views. What I said, Todd, was "I will admit that sometimes I ask him to move things that could require two people. But you have to admit that most people at my store are not over six feet tall with a bodybuilders physique. I would never ask him to do something I felt was beyound his, or my own capabilities. He knows that if he feels he can't do something alone, all he has to do is call the store and we will send help." The key word is in the first sentence "could". I would never send my smallest employee, who is about 5' 5" tall and weighs in at roughly 100 lbs, to deliver a washer alone. Even with a dolly that would be too much for that employee. I, on the other hand am 6' 9" and weigh in over 300 lbs. I can deliver almost anything in my store, using the proper equipment, alone. Wife's husband is never asked to do any thing beyond his physical limits. OSHA has no such broad guidelines for lifting. Limits are determined by the individual, and he does not exceed his. Ever. I also love it when people who type like they are still in early grade school call me stupid. I run a half a million dollar a year business sucsessfully, even in these hard times. The only reason I am succsessful is my TEAM works hard, so do I. So try to keep your OPINIONS to yourself.

I have been with RAC for 13 years. When I started we were known as renters choice. Back then when I was a account mgr. we had to to make deliveries wearing a long sleave shirt and tie. Making a so called 2 person delivery by yourself was expected. See that is why each store supplies each box truck with a $300.00 dolly! As far as the mgr meetings, we do not even get reinbursed for our gas or mileage. As far as a vacation, he must put in a 30 day notice. The company pays you for not taking your sick days as a incentive for coming to work. The days buisness dictates when you can take a lunch. We are there to service our customers needs. And without them we would not have a job. Each manager runs their store based on how they were trained when they were a asst. mgr. I personnaly treat my crew with respect. The more that they know and the happier they are, makes my job that much easier. But at the same time they must have a happy home life! I have had zero turnover for the past 3 years. My daughter just graduated from high school this year. As I reflect back I realize how much of her life that I missed and can not get back. But at the same time, my employement with RAC is paying for her college!

ACTUALLY I ENJOYED READING THIS MANAGERS RESPONSE TO THE WIFE OF A CURRENT EMPLOYEE, ALL OF WHAT HE STATES IS TRUE,ESPECIALLY ABOUT OUR MONTHLY MANAGERS MEETING BTW I JUST GOT BACK FROM 1 THIS WEEK, 10 HOURS OF WELL LETS SAY CONSTUCTIVE REVIEW. RAC ASK'S FOR A LOT OF ITS CO-WORKERS AND IT REWARDS THEM WELL, IF HE WANTS TO IMPROVE HIS LOT IN LIFE AND "MOVE" UP THEN THERE IS A COST TO BE PAID, TIME AWAY FROM FAMILY IS THE MAJOR 1. AS FAR AS BREAKS? MOST STORES GIVE OUR Cars A VERY FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE WITH A LOT OF DOWN TIME, MEANING THEY DONT GO-GO 10 HOURS A DAY, WHETHER ITS MAKING CALLS OR RUNNING CREDIT, OR DOING DELIVERIES THEY HAVE AMPLE TIME TO RECOUP FROM A NASTY 1 MAN DELIVERY IF THATS NEEDED. I'VE DONE THEM AS WELL AS PROB 99% OF ALL RAC WORKERS SO I SAY TO THAT WIFE, IT PUTS FOOD ON YOUR TABLE AND A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD, SUPPORT YOUR HUSBAND AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND IF HE DOESNT WANT TO TALK WHEN HE GETS HOME, HES BEEN TALKING ALL DAY

My lord you people who run RAC are dumb......You just clearly admitted that you force that womans husband to move items that "should" require 2 people because he is "over 6 ft, blah blah blah." OSHA (do you know what that is?) has set the legal guidelines for what 1 individual may move "by himself" regardless of how "big and strong" that individual is...... You have now basicly admitted here on these forums that not only are you shady, but you also thumb your nose at OSHA guidelines.....Look it up.

To the O.P., If you or your husband is unhappy with the way things are going at his store, you should contact the HR department. That is not how things are supposed to go at RAC. To Wife in Houlton who wrote: "My husband has worked at rent-a-center for almost 2 years now, he has not taken any vacation days sick days and his day off never stays the same. He works 50 something hours a week the manager hardly ever gives him a lunch brake or his 2 15 minuet brakes. This is starting to effect him phisicaly and emotionaly. He never gets reconized for what he does. He gets sent to do 2 men jobs by himself. WE have 4 kids so we count on this job. His manager is hardly ever there and if he was or new how to run the store than my husdand wouldn't be so over worked in my opinion. has anyone been over worked at Rent-a-Center if so what can he do about this and still keep his job?" As the manager of the only RAC in the big city of Houlton, I can only assume you are talking about me and one of my guys. Let me take a few minutes to clear up some things that either you don't understand, or were sorely misinformed about. When your husband was hired he was told the very same things I was upon my hire. The MINIMUM schedule for any RAC employee is 48 hours a week. That means EVERYONE at my store works AT LEAST 48 hours a week. If your husband wants to move up at any point, and trust me he will move up, he will have to get used to a 50 hour a week schedule. An asst. mgr. position is a 50 hour week MINIMUM. Your husband also gets to take a break whenever he wants to, as long as there is not something scheduled for delivery, pick up, or service. Ask him if I have ever said "no" when he wanted to h*o to the store for personal reasons. The worst thing that ever happens is when he has to take his break in the passenger seat of the van. Vacation is there for your husband to take WHENEVER he wants to. You are only entitled to vacation when you have been with the company for over a year, Your husband has been there for about a year and a half. And he gets JUST as much vacation as I do. There are procedures that he needs to follow, and he knows what they are, to get his vacation time. In fact I got a vacation request from him not too long ago. Sick days? He knows what happens if he doesn't take his two sick days. He gets paid for them. No one gets the same day off EVERY week. Not even me. Sometimes it's just not in the scedule for it. If someone needs a specific day off I need to know AT LEAST a week in advance. Now if you would like to talk about MY schedule, maybe you should talk to my wife. You think it's rough when your husband works 50 hours a week? Ask him how often he gets there before me. Then ask how often I leave before the store closes. I put my time in EVERYDAY. If I'm sick or there is an emergency and I have to leave early, I don't get sick days. I have to make up the time I missed. Ask your husband what happened last week when I had to take my wife to the emergency room. I was there for 6 and half hours. To make up for it I didn't get a day off. Did you know Memorial Day Is coming up? I did. Do you want to know why? Because unlike your husband, and every other employee at my store, I don't get a day off that week. No manager gets a day off other that the holiday and Sunday. It works like that for every holiday. How about the days when I get to get up EXTRA early and drive for two hours to sit in a market meeting for 10 hours and then drive two hours back? Those days are extra special fun. As far as recognition goes, ask him if we have been meeting or exceeding company standard. I know what the answer to that question is. Also ask him to explain what some of the numbers he works with on a daily basis are, then ask him where they should be. When we do good as a team we get rewarded as a team. If you would like an example, look at your husband as he leaves for work tomorrow. Notice he is in jeans and sneakers? Want to know why? Because they were given a task to do today and did it well, so now they can blow off the company dress code for a day. It's not much but it's better than nothing. I will admit that sometimes I ask him to move things that could require two people. But you have to admit that most people at my store are not over six feet tall with a bodybuilders physique. I would never ask him to do something I felt was beyound his, or my own capabilities. He knows that if he feels he can't do something alone, all he has to do is call the store and we will send help. I think that if you have somthing to say to me, maybe you should just come out and say it to my face. It's been a long time since high school, and I never liked high school politics to begin with.
