Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Rent-A-Center has long been known as a consumer rip-off. All across the country the Rent to own industry has been in hot water. Firstly, they over charge consumers for inferior goods that have been damage, infested with roaches, and other problems. They charge FOUR TIMES THE AMOUNT for equipment and furniture than it is WORTH!! I am writing this report because I was let go at the same time as several other individual's in our market. I was let go because my shirt was not tucked into my pants. Another individual was demoted from store manager to customer account rep. The last one was let go for insubordination without any previous reports or warnings. We were all let go in a two day time span with leads me to think there were discriminating practices going on behind the scenes. I worked for them for 10 months, after only six I was promoted to Assistant manager. Working long days usually 12 hours days and only received two sicks days. If you called out you were in danger of losing your job, and if you did call out then you had to come in on your day off. It was a hellish existence to work 55 plus hours a week, and only come home with a 400 dollar check! There turn over rate is sad at 60%. You are held to meet daily standards which require you to risk your life by going into the worst neighborhoods asking customers for cash or their equipment. If you do not get your customers to pay there bills on time then you are written up, after three write ups you are fired!!! It is almost impossible to make someone pay a bill in this economy! You are made to harass your customers by calling them three to four times a day EVERY DAY! I am in the process of talking to Rent-A-Center's Human Resources to come to a conclusion. This is to anyone thinking of working with Rent-A-Center or doing business with Rent-A-Center please understand what you are getting yourself into.

Can happen, but not likely.

It doesn't happen quite like they want to make it out. What will happen is that RAC will file an affidavit for criminal theft. You'll get letter in the mail with a case number telling you to appear on a certain date. Failure to appear will end up in a warrant, otherwise if you go to court, they'll tell you to return the merchandise by a certain date and the case will be closed. However, you will have it on your public record.

If you have their merchandise and you don't return it when asked, then yes they can take you to jail. Its theft. When you rent to own, the item is theirs until paid off. if you just owe them money, but they have taken the item back, then no they will just sue you for what is owed.

Yes they can take you to court. You signed a contract with them to pay a certain amount for the merchandice or to return the merchandice. If you are unable to make the payments I would suggest to contact the store manager and try to work something out before you're late on payments. If it comes to court the decision will probably be return the merchandice and pay what you already owe OR keep the merchandice and pay the full amount you would owe through the contract. Jail would probably not be an considered unless (worst case scenario) you tell the judge you no longer have the merchandice to return and you're not going to pay. That could be considered theft as the property belongs to RAC until you pay it off.

Will Rent A Center take you to court for a past due account? Can they actually have you sent to jail?

Only use for the rent to own stores

I have purchased one item from a rent to own store, and will never do it again. I will, however, rent items from a rent to own store for a period of a few weeks or so. The other good thing about these stores is if you are attempting to sell a house. You can rent the furniture for the open house and keep it for only a few weeks and return it and you are only out the amount of the rent on the furniture. If you absolutely need something it's better to take the money you would be paying rent a center and save it up for a few months. You can usually get the same item in 6 months by saving up then paying rent a center for 2 or 3 years.
