"Laura" is getting better at what she is doing. I am aware of Craiglists rental scams and I missed this angle. I thought she was being efficient after spending a week running around filling out apps and paying multiple landlords to run background it seemed logical to me.
The apartment was priced reasonably for the area. The scam is the background check and the money you pay for it. She asked for my phone number but did not provide hers.
It was after I looked at the letter again that something seemed off. She said that if the score was not high she could still work with you. The first time I read it as she could not work with you. Why order background and then disregard it? She also said that she did not take a pet deposit.
She is running the same scam in LA, San Francisco, Syracuse and other places.
