On 5/24/16, I started the 6-Week Transformation Project with Revolution Fitness Club. As shown on the Automatic Payment Authorization, I agreed to have my credit card debited $25.00 a week, for the 6 week period with a choice to extend the sessions and authorize the future charges. The statement under Automatic Payment Authorization contradicts the cancellation policy. While I did not cancel after the 2nd week (too early to know if I’d want to continue), I also did not authorize my card to be charged after the 6 weeks.
Although it shouldn’t have taken me 5 weeks to notice that I was still being charged. When I emailed the owner and asked him to credit me the extra 5 weeks that I wasn’t there, not only did he say no, but that he is charging me for 4 MORE WEEKS based on his cancellation policy of a 30 day notice. So that’s 9 extra weeks for $25.00 a week. My attorney called it “legal, but underhanded and sketchy”. Why would you need a cancellation policy on a 6 week program? If I owned that business, I would just be happy that people would stay week to week after the program ended. It’s really sad that he needs that money so bad that he doesn’t care that he’s losing a customer and possible referrals for it.
Lessons learned (the hard way):
1. Review credit card statements better
2. Get into the nitty gritty details of any contract, no matter how simple it seems.
