We purchased two yorkie puppies that had a written guarantee for one year. One died two weeks after purchase of severe intestinal infection from possible liver shunt and cost $1000 in vet bills.

The second puppie is now 6 months old and is deathly ill with liver shunt and has cost $500 so far in vet bills. The breeder is in total denial and has threaten and rudly cursed my wife out and told her to go blow her brains out.All we want is for this breeder to be shut down and our money rufunded along with all the vet bills. can someone please help us?

Being a vet you should know the importance of a vet exam

Seems if this buyer was responsible enough to take the dogs in for a first initial vet visit, the cocci would of been caught. Fact is! if the buyer would of taken the dogs in to their vet for a first time initial vet visit the cocci would of been caught. IF the dogs had a low immune system, as you want to say without an examine, then I would say they would of caught it IF they took the dogs in for an initial vet visit. The all so wonderful albon wouldn't of worked on a suppressed immune system right? so they would of known that there was something a bit deeper wrong with these dogs and could of returned them ALIVE! IF they made it to 5 months of age and then died in the buyers care, Well? what does that tell you. The buyer is irresponsible, IF they would of taken the dogs into their vet the moment they got them or even within 72 hours as most breeders require then the cocci would of been spotted and handled or the dogs could of been returned. I know my vet requires fecal SO if someone comes in with a puppy and they were not informed by their breeder to take a fecal in, then my vet tells them to drop a sample off that day or the next. I am sure most responsible vets do this. Do you? SO had they of taken their dogs in within 72 hours of getting them, and had they of gone to the vet, even if the breeder did not mention to them how important it is to have a fecal done, then their vet would of let them know how important it is. Maybe the runny, smelly poop wasn't a sign that they needed some vet assistance? How about lack of appitite? vomitting? butt scooting? maybe these dogs were different from all other cocci infected dogs and had none of the signs listed. If they had it that bad, believe me, there would be signs. It is vets like you that love when irresponsible people don't take their dogs in to purchase a puppy package and get that vet, pet owner relationship going. They can make 2000.00 on an emergency visit instead of 200.00 for a well puppy package. You should do the ethical thing here and promote vet visitations the moment you get your pups whether they are 8 weeks or 8 years. Unfortunately a lesson learned for a "Supposed" breeder. I hope they require their pups to go in for a vet visit.

Puppies should not have cocci at 5 months of age. That a 5 month old had cocci at all is odd. That a 5 month old had such a poor immune system that cocci would advance to death proves the dog was sickly and weak to start with. How many breeders have heard of cocci killing puppies over 4 month? It is unheard of. Cocci only kills puppies under 3 month that have immature immune systems, some even medicated puppies will die because of genetic immune defects. The dog being 5 month old led the breeder who sold the dog to assume that a 5 month old would have immunity against C. Probably the breeder did not say anything about a C possibility to the buyer because of the puppies age HEALTHY Dogs have immune systems are good enough by about 14 weeks to keep C in check. I very much know what I am talking about as I am a licensed Veterinarian who also breeds boxers. I am sorry if I offended some of you breeders, but you must understand that some dogs have genetic immune disorders and if a dog of 5 months old would die of C, it wasn't a 2 week infection that killed him. It was a long lasting immune disorder that not only led to an increase in the parasite to dangerous levels when the dog was moved, but also caused a infection which spread systemic, also from the defective immune system. Any breeder who sells a puppy with a pre-existing parasite infection is responsible, if the buyer does not do fecal's and monitor the new puppy. Most buyers will not know to do fecal's and mono tor the puppy if they are not educated by their breeder. So it is important to choose a breeder who will instruct buyers to do fecal exams on new puppies and to watch for Cocci signs I have a strong feeling that this breeder who sold the 5 month old did not give any kind of heads up or warnings to the new buyer. The new buyer being a breeder also, would assume that he bought a dog already treated for worms and mites of all kinds. I stick with the fact that if a dog is sold with any kind of pre-existing aliment that the breeder is liable.

Siding with the breeder about the cocci

#4Consumer Comment

Thu, May 10, 2007

I would have to side with the breeder about the cocci problem. Most breeders give 72 hours to take the pup to the vet. A common fecal test would of caught the problem and it would of been taking care of for 25.00 worth of Albon instead of NOT taking the puppies in to get a check up. This is not the breeders fault. Not one breeder I know would warranty against this. 72 hours is the maximum I have seen on warrantees. I think Becky has no idea what she is talking about. The irrisponsible buyers should of known to take the dogs in for a complete check up no matter if they are 8 weeks or 10 years. Cocci is stress related, cocci comes to surface during a stresful time. Becky, do you know a breeder who would warranty these pups? 2 weeks of cocci is deadly! 2 WEEKS! Please give us a list of breeders who would let the buyer NOT take care of the pups in this manner AND then warranty them. The buyer could of gotten a negative fecal test prior to leaving, but the stress of leaving their home to a new home is enough to bring it to surface. IF the pups had a severe case then it would of been caught and taken care of with no complications within the 72 hours.

Dog didn't "get" sick. Dog was sold "already" infected at the time of sale

#5Consumer Suggestion

Wed, May 09, 2007

A puppy is sold WITH A SICKNESS that the breeder did not catch before sale. The breeder sold a sick dog. A very unhealthy dog to start with. The buyer should not be blamed for being sold a sick dog ! Then the buyer goes home and spends the next two weeks going through hell trying to save the sick dog. The buyer said the dog was sick from the start. The buyer paid over 2000.00 to try to save his sickly dog. The buyer proved he did right by spending thousands of dollars to save the sickly dog he purchased. Should any buyer have to go through that? A buyer should take a new puppy home and have fun, not fight to save it's life. And then the sickly dog dies and breeders come on here and put the blame on the buyer and his vet. At least the breeder who sold the sickly 5 month old dog should admit he sold a puppy ALREADY infected with parasites. And the dog had an immune disorder. A 5 month old should have had immunity to coci by the age he sold. If he didn't then the breeder should have had him on medication for the coci before he was sold. That dog had to have some signs of having coci before he was sold! The breeder should at the very least replace the dog The buyer sold a sickly dog in the first place end of story

I have a comment on this, not knowing either the buyer or the seller. I am a breeder of chihuahuas and I know how quickly a dog can get a parasite. It's not always a result of bad breeding. A dog can go outside and lick some puddled water and within 24 hours have diarrhea from a parasite. As far as the buyer, if the dog was sick within 2 weeks, they should have gone to the vet. If they did and the dog had a liver shunt, it would have typically been seen and likely would have killed the pup by the time it was 3 months of age. Low blood sugar death is a result of improper feeding. Parasites will take about a week to start being fatal if left untreated. If the buyer took the dogs to the vet and it didn't diagnose properly, how is that the seller's fault? If the buyer feels wronged, the seller here has said what he will do. He has agreed to meet her at the vet, take the injured dog back. What more can he do when the buyer refuses? And walking funny in a small dog isn't a sign of liver shunt. If it were a liver shunt, the dog would be dead by now. I understand that many people here have been wronged by breeders. But to me, it sounds like this breeder has done things right. Maybe it's a need for the buyer and the seller to sit down together to reach a happy medium. All I ask is that people don't always assume that the breeder has done something wrong. Remember that sometimes it is the owner's fault when a dog gets sick.

I have known Rick and Fayrene Morgan for many years. I have bought two dogs from them. The female I bought was just as he described, healthy and well able to produce champion puppies. I was well pleased with her. I bought a show prospect last year and showed him for several months, at which time a problem developed which led to him not able to be shown. I contacted Rick and he offered me a replacment puppy. He is always ready to talk things out. He and his mother are wonderful people and I would buy again from them. Breeder from Louisiana

TREAT THE PARASITES IN YOUR PUPPIES AND YOUR DOGS

#11Consumer Suggestion

Fri, March 16, 2007

Rick Morgan, TWO PUPPIES WERE SOLD NOT ONE I would be furious if I bought a puppy that had a parasite infection and it died a week or two after I had it. Breeders cop out by saying they do not warranty against these parasites so puppies are sold full of bugs and die and the breeder says Oh well, We don't cover that. No wonder Phil didn't want to spend hundreds or thousands for testing on Dreamer, since he already spent so much AND lost his first puppy to a disease breeders are so afraid of they won't cover. Refund the buyer for the puppy that died of the Cocci bugs. Give him back the money he spent on trying to save the parasite filled puppy you sold. Of course buyers get angry when a new puppy dies and they are heartbroken. Of course they call the police, the animal control, the attorney general and the news channels. Of course they call the breeder over and over and over when the breeder doesnt do anything. They wouldnt have to call you over and over if you would do what is right. You cant take thousands of dollars from the buyer and sell sickly puppies filled with bugs You even admit Rick that you got sick of them calling you so gave in and decided to DO SOMETHING Only after you were pushed into it. THATS IS RIGHT BUYERS! FIGHT AND DON'T GIVE UP! How dare the breeder call the police on buyers because the buyers are so sad and distraught and demand justice. Of course they called and called as they feel so cheated, losing a sick puppy you sold them and their money too. SHAME ON ALL YOU BREEDERS WHO COP OUT

I bought a show prospect chihuahua from Rick last year on a verbal contract. When my puppy arrived off of the airplane, his ears were flopped over. Broken ears are a cosmetic problem that most people wouldn't care about but they are a disqualification for showing in conformation events. I contacted Rick to tell him about the problem I was having. Rick was immediately concerned and told me that if the ears did not go back up, he would replace my puppy. He did not ask me for proof that the ears were flopped, which could have been easily provided with a photograph. Through discussion, we both decided we would give the puppy some time since his ears had been up before. Perhaps he was stressed? Teething? Puppies ears were up and beautiful within 2-3 weeks of arriving here. I contacted Rick and told him the good news. In the year I have owned my puppy, Rick has always been available to me and he is dedicated to his dogs, his reputation and his name. He has always been soft spoken and willing to answer questions about what is behind my dog, training techniques and anything else we discuss. He has never been rude like he is accused here. Here is my question: If Rick was ready, willing and able to promise me a new puppy based on broken ears, and no proof, why wouldn't he help a person with a sick puppy with a congenital defect? I am not buying this buyers story. I think there is more to it than what is reported. This buyer states "possible" liver shunt. Not proven liver shunt. Severe intestinal infection does follow the thought that the buyer did not treat the puppy for coccidea. What really irritates me is that this buyer is also a breeder and should be well aware of the signs and symptoms of coccidea. This puppy died needlessly due to lack of vet care from a buyer that should have known better. The second puppy appeared to be ill for quite some time before the buyer took it to a vet. Why? What was the delay? Why haven't you done the final testing that would prove whether this puppy has liver shunt? If I was Rick, there would be no way in Hades that you would ever get your hands on another puppy of mine. You have proven that you are either incapable or unwilling to look after them properly. You should consider yourself fortunate and take him up on his offer to return the pup. I dont feel he owes you anything for the first pup since you never paid for it. Then, on top of that you didn't pay him his stud fee either. Sounds rotten to me. JMHO

Sounds like the buyer should of been more aware of Coccidiosis or at least taken the dog in to the vet when the pup had loose stools. As far as pup #2, sounds like not very good vets used if all 3 came up with a different finding. It does sound genetic and I do hope you help these people out with this pup and it sounded as if you are more then happy to help them. Rick, I have been to your site and love your dogs. I think this is something that will work itself out if you two can communicate. I hope to own a Morgan's puppy some day too.

To who it may concern, My name is Rick Morgan. I sold Phil and Pam 2 healthy yorkie puppies. Upon selling the puppies they signed a contract with a guarantee for the puppies to be healthy, sound and free of ANY Life Threatening Genetic Defects. They said they took the puppies to the vet and they passed with flying colors. While they were at my home, on August 19, 2006, to pick up just one puppy they decided to purchase the second one. The first puppy's name is Dreamer(3 1/2 months old), the second is Blue(4 1/2 months old). Around the second week of September Pam called me with very upsetting news, Blue had died of low blood sugar. I told her she should have a necropsy done to rule out any genetic problems or negligence on the vet's part. She did, and the result was SEVERE INTESTINAL INFLAMATION. This was caused by Coccidiosis*. This is not LIVER SHUNT. At this time she stated that Dreamer was walking funny. I told her to shave the hair from the bottom of his feet. This should help with the slipping, sliding and falling. Sometime in October she called to tell me that Dreamer was still walking funny. I told her to take him to her vet. About 3 weeks later she phoned again to chat about a breeding she had done with my male. She was very excited about her female yorkie having her litter. She again told me that Dreamer was still walking funny. I asked her if she had taken him to the vet and she said no. I told her again to take him to the vet. I spoke with Pam MANY times about taking Dreamer to the vet from October through December 2006. Finally, after more than 2 months of telling her to take poor Dreamer to the vet she did. The first vet told her that he had a back injury and that he needed surgery. The second vet told her that he had a neurological problem and the third vet told her that it looked like Liver Shunt. She did blood work and the results all came back normal. The Vet did a Bile Acid test and there were no alarming results. On the day of doing the test the vet did put Dreamer on medication that would be given to a dog with Liver Shunt. I showed the lab results to my vet and he told me that he did not think Dreamer had Liver Shunt BUT he would have to see him and there would be a Dye Test to run to get the Liver Shunt diagnosis. I asked him to call Pam's vet. After speaking to Pam's vet my vet told me the same thing that Pam's vet told her. He did not give her dog a diagnosis of Liver Shunt but he did tell her that he would need to do more tests to determine if Dreamer has Liver Shunt. To this date Phil and Pam have not done that test to get the diagnosis of Liver Shunt. Starting December 9, 2006 and ending January 3, 2007 I received over 300 harassing phone calls and over 200 voice mails. I had to file a report with the police department to have her stop calling. I also have all the emails showing what was said between Pam, Phil and myself. I also recorded most all of the voice mails. If we go to court I will have all this as evidence showing that I did offer to replace Dreamer. I told Phil and Pam from the very beginning to take Dreamer to the vet to see what was wrong with him. If it was genetic then I would replace him, but if he was injured then there was nothing I could do. On December 29, 2006 I was tired of the harassing so I told Pam that I would take Dreamer back and that I would meet her at my vet to take delivery of him. I was to have my vet do what test needed to be done to see what was wrong with Dreamer. Pam told me that she would not meet me and not to email her again. I emailed until January 5, 2007 trying to get them to meet me to return Dreamer. They refused to do so. So, based on their actions, I must assume that Dreamer was injured by one of their other dogs or one of their children. I do not know what else to do to make this right. I offered to replace Dreamer and that still stands. They can contact me anytime with a diagnosis from their vet. As for the purchase of Blue, while Phil and Pam had the money to purchase Dreamer, they did not have the money to purchase Blue. Dreamers price was $1000 and Blue was $500. Pam signed a contract stating she would pay the $500 for Blue by January 1, 2007. After Blue died I DID NOT ask them to pay for him even though they were contracted to do so. THEY ALSO NEVER PAID THE STUD FEE FOR BREEDING THEIR GIRL TO MY MALE. I am not an unreasonable person and I will go the extra mile to make sure people are happy. I NEVER told Pam to blow her brains out. How terrible!! Rick Morgan * WHAT IS COCCIDIOSIS? Clinical signs of coccidiosis usually are present or shortly following stress such as weather changes; weaning; long automobile or plane rides; relocation to a new home and new owners. Symptoms or signs of coccidiosis will depend on the state of the disease at the time of observation. In general, coccidiosis affects the intestinal tract and symptoms are associated with it. In mild cases, only a watery diarrhea may be present, and if blood is present in the feces, it is only in small amounts. Severely affected animals may have a thin, watery feces with considerable amounts of intestinal mucosa and blood. Straining usually is evident, rapid dehydration, weight loss and anorexia (off feed) also may be clinically visible. Death may follow the acute disease either directly or from secondary diseases such as pneumonia. Animals that survive for 10 to 14 days may recover, however, permanent damage may occur. Research has indicated that canines may experience reduced food consumption for up to 13 weeks following clinical infection. Diagnosis usually is obvious but confusion does exist apparently normal animals can also have oocysts present in their feces. Diarrhea may be present in the animal before the oocysts can be found, therefore, a confirmed laboratory diagnosis may not always be possible. Laboratory findings should be correlated with clinical signs for a diagnosis. Death may follow the acute disease either directly or from secondary diseases such as pneumonia. Hello Phil Here is some great advise found on a Breeder's website you can use to help you with the owners of Morgan Chihuahuas. WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED A PUPPY AND NOW FIND YOUR NEW FAMILY MEMBER IS SICK AND YOUYR BREEDER IS NOT HELPING Depending on the situation, here is a few things to help recover your money or at least vet bills. Very Important, KEEP ALL EMAILS, save them in a file in your inbox. Jot down anything discussed on the phone. If there is anything on their website that is against what has happened to you, please print it up. If you see that a breeder is publishing information on his/her website that is the opposite of what they have done to you, then this is valueable inforation for you if you ever have to go to court. NEVER, think it is not worth the cost to go to court. In some states you can actually sue in your home town which means the breeder must come to you. 1. Contact the animal control in the breeder's area. It is quite simple to find the agency in a particular area, just type in "Animal Control (and the city you sent your money to)" the county office should pop up. Also you may need to fax proof so be prepaired with all your vet bills and paperwork showing your breeder's information. 2. Keep in mind that if you did not get what you paid for then it is concidered, Internet fraud if you found your new puppy online. submit this form (((link redacted))) Here is another good site (((link redacted))) 3. Now, if you paid with a postal money order and sent it via US mail, then that is another fraud, mail fraud. Report to this site (((redacted))) 4. Contact the District Attorney's office in your breeder's area 5. Contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau) http://www.bbb.org 6. If your pup is registered, contact the organization on the paperwork. ONLY accept AKC pups unless you are in Canada for which CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) nothing less... 7. If your pup was flown to you, make sure you have the paperwork off of the carrier, it contains, shipper name, vet used to obtain a health cert for the pup to fly and info regarding your puppy 8. Check the puppy lemon law in your area Click here If you let the breeder get away with selling you a sick puppy then, they will continue to sell sick puppies to other families, and break many hearts doing so. Don't give up and don't let them get away with it! CLICK here to see why Rip-off Report, as a matter of policy, deleted either a phone number, link or e-mail address from this Report.

Hello Phil, You sound like your heart is breaking.I can't imagine purchasing two babies and have one die within 2 weeks. Then to have the second one you must love so much, be so sick with a genetic defect. The breeder is probably still breeding the parents and producing more fatally ill puppies to sell to the public. I feel so bad for you.It sounds like your online experience has been nothing but hell. There is much you can do to force breeders like Rick Morgan and Fayrene Morgan to refund you and pay your sick puppies medical bills. Contact the Chihuahua Club of America and report these breeders. Contact the Attorney General in their area and ask them to investigate this couple. Contact the AKC and tell them what happened. Contact animal control in the breeders area and ask them to see if this breeder is licensed and in compliance with the laws for that area. Contact the police department and file a report with them. Contact all of the ONLINE DOG ADVERTISING sites this breeder advertises with and tell them what happened to you. Contact Rick and Fayrene Morgans own website company and complain about the website being used to sell sick puppies. Last but not least contact the news media. There is Fox News, Inside Edition, 20/20, they would all love a story about a breeder selling very sick dogs. This type of issue is HOT right now and I am sure they would love to follow your heart breaking story to see how the buyer and breeder resolve this terrible issue.Contact them today. Good luck to you, and I hope this turns out to be a misunderstanding with the breeder takeing care of you. Keep us posted
