These a**holes told me that I need a $650 new A/C compressor job. Soon thereafter, I found that the job should cost much less. Soon after that, a coworker looked at the car and determined that the compressor works! I fixed the problem with a $16 can of freon.

My AC is still blowing cold, contrary to the claims in the company's response that the compressor would soon go out. For shame!!!

A/C Freon is invisible as a gas, visable with detectors.

On a good working system select defrost and watch what happens next.

Did your compressor clutch engage? Should have, on a good working system.

There is basically two reasons for this amazing phenomenon.

1) A/C systems seals will dry in time. Not applying the lube to them will accelerate this deteriation process thus, causing sealing issues and leaks.

2) Most people don't run their A/C's in the winter. Just doesn't make good sense in North America. Sure there are plenty of people in the southern regions that will disagree and they are right. But, they are also allowed to drive their cars up north aye?

Anyway, when the Defrost is selected the A/C clutch is activated to allow for the lube to run through the system maintaining good seal preservation. Although, not foolproof it is effective in keeping the seals at least somewhat lubed during the winter months when you would not normally run the A/C compressor.

With that being said, obviously leaks are predicted from the original design and prevention methods are inhernt in design of Automotive A/C units. Apples and oranges when compared to a deviced that stays out of the weather and runs during all seasons. By the way there is protective lube (it passes through all the time) in household fridge units as well and the defrost is of totally different purpose.

So, if you have a car with leaking system you just keep on putting that cheap bandaid can of freon in it until it finally fries out your bearing on your compressor and locks up the serpentine belt. It may take a year or two, but I will still let you pay me to fix it.

I won't charge as much as most in Tulsa cause I know 7-800$$ is just a freaking ripoff. Most compressors are actually around $200 and the rest is freon (3-4 cans worth) and labor cost.

Don't get ripped off, get educated

"Air Compressors' will leak Freon in the winter if you do not run your AC every so often." Really? I've never had to recharge a refrigerator, and they sit for months/years before being used for the first time. The only time I have ever had to have freon added to my house A/C system is when it needs repair. I got almost 15 years out of the last unit without any freon leaking out. BTW...I don't run the A/C when it's cold outside. Why do you geniuses think it's "normal" for your car's system to lose freon? Please explain EXACTLY what is different between an automotive system, a house system, and an appliance system, besides the code on the refrigerant used. Also explain why most people do not require adding freon in their car's systems regularly, but only when repair work is done.

Hello Automotive Experts at Same Day Auto Repair!!! Air Compressors' will leak Freon in the winter if you do not run your AC every so often. I know may people who have had their AC charged and never had anymore problems with it. This is not Rocket Science!! So basically, Same Day Auto Repair you did not give the consumer the whole story or option to try just adding Freon instead of replacing the entire system. I really enjoyed the spin you tried to put on your rebutal. LOL! Funny how this sounds very very familiar to me. I actually experienced almost the same service at Same Day Auto Repair except my estimate was much more, probably because I am a female. When are you folks going to quit trying to rip off hard working Americans and Insurance Companies?

In response to the two "rebuttals" offered, it's been two months and the compressor is still going strong. There is no evidence of a leak from the compressor (like visible moisture/oil) and there has been no locking up. At the absolute least, I was given no options in terms of long-term solution vs. short-term. The $16 freon has solved the problem for 2 months and counting (it's still warm in Oklahoma). Even if the compressor was a pressing problem, which it looks like this is the last warm weekend until spring, I have had 2 mechanics and 1 auto parts sales person tell me $650 is way too much (Oklahoma dollars).

I've been in the car business for many years. I'm sure the customer of the repiar shop will find that his A/C problem will be back because of a leaky compressor. They usually leak out the front of the compressor where the compressor drive shaft exits the compressor body. This customer is wrong and will be sweating because of no A/C again soon.

A/C PROBLEMS

To whom it may concern, In response to above report on this problem with compressor leak and customer installing a $16.00 can of freon and fixing his problem. When we checked vehicle for problems or leaks the system was low on freon. As anyone in the automotive field knows freon does not go bad it goes away from a leak in system somewhere. The leak in this system was from the a/c compressor. Yes we could have installed freon in system and it would have leaked back out, but we told the customer the correct way to repair the vehicle was to install a new compressor. The customer declined repairs and took the vehicle. If they installed a can freon in system and now it works then that shows there was a leak and will continue to leak until the compressor is replaced. Did we do anything wrong in this situation? Thanks
