Have been in Schuler's many times over the past fifty years, and never have had a bad meal or service with an attitude. The customer from Houghton was obviously in the wrong with attitude and expectations. One cannot drain down a bottle of wine then expect another one "one the house". They don't allow that to happen, even in Houghton!

I am a server in an up scale restaurant in my city and I have to tell you that you are so totally wrong to have expected the server or manager to take the total of the wine that you and your 5 guests drank. You cannot just decide that you don't like a wine and then send it back. As some one else stated if the bottle was corked or had turned then you could have refused it and chosen something else. and to say that a 23.00 dollar bottle of wine is expensive is just plain being uninformed. You got up and chased the manager around to try and prove your point and then expected him or her to at least comp your meal because it had gotten cold while you were on this tirade, you are amazing, and it never ceases to amaze me what and how people who eat out always want something for nothing and then if you don't get what you want you stiff the server, how rude. We make our living from out tips and are paid a very minimum hr wage, most of us never see a real paycheck. I just get so disgusted by people like you who have the nerve to not only go to a restaurant and show really rude behavior, were tatally wrong in how you precieved the situation, but then had the nerve to complain about it in this forum, are you nuts? I just had to state my case as I fell that the standard of service in this country is so low and really not givin anywhere but in the dinig out experience. I feel you we're rude to have performed the way you did and probably embarassed the others. kudos to the manager and server who refused to take the wine off your bill, I live in another stae and town and the rules are the same. p.s. A bottle of standard wine will only serve 4 people if poured properly so if your waiter got to 5 he was trying to be helpful, not gough you.

Sorry, but etiquette dictates: (basic/broad) You examine wine upon presentation to determine whether it is the bottle you ordered. You then indicate to your waiter uncork the bottle. You examine the cork, for mold, saturation etc.. You examine/taste wine. You accept or decline. **One may only decline if the wine has turned.** If you simply do not like the wine, the restaurant is under no obligation to take back/swap etc.. However depending on the restaurant, the particular wine and your attitude, exceptions can and often are made. If the wine is sold by the glass, they might take it back for example. etc. etc. etc..

Don't drink but see it done all the time. The one person with the most experience should have sampled the wine first. If it had been bad the bottle could have been refused. Have seen that done. Not after it's been poured and " a few more sips " had been taken by 5 people. Otherwise everyone would deceide they didn't like 2 or 3 different bottles after they were consumed. If you wanted to go out and argue with the manager while your dinner was getting cold, that's your fault. Who made a big deal out of the wine and ruined the celebration. If they had read your mind and held your dinner, you'd be bitching about not getting served on time along with everyone else. New bottle of wine, new dinner, I see a pattern here. I think the sobbing women has other issues. Did you want to put on a show for everyone to see? Following the manager out to continue the disagreement, and threaten not to come back. The manager probably wishes you don't come back. If I went to that restaurant, I'd wish you wouldn't come back.

The time to return the wine was when you first tried it out. Not when you have almost finished it. Sorry to say but your group was in the wrong. You mentioned a tablemate had tears in her eyes, it could have been from embarrassment.
