There was an advertisement for South Carolina Film institute somewhere and they were looking for staff. I turned up and they wanted me to pay $30 cash to join their gang. Cash, mind you! There did not seem to be a job. The office was one of the s****.>

There is no job. None of the individuals showed any identification other than a scruffy looking piece of paper that claimed they were "buskers". That paper looked pretty fake too.

The office had no lights on - the furnature all looked rented - clearly a minimal expenditure ripoff. I very much doubt these people were related to the genuine South Carolina Film Institute based in Greenville.

It was a pair of black guys - one of whom was clearly gay and was hiding behind a pair of women's sunglasses. They had no interest in anything other than parting people from $30. Very fake and they weren't even any good at it.

Before joining the SC Film Institute, I contacted the SC Film Commission to get their take on the organization. They were familiar with them and, although not knowing that much about them, identified them as a legitimate organization trying hard to establish a good reputation and bring the film industry to the state. The SC Film Commission watches for "scams" and they feel that these two young men are legit with a strong desire to succeed in the business. The fact that they are actually producing commercials for the Richland County Sheriff's office and are working on a full scale movie production should be evidence enough that they are trying to be successful.

The Complaint is Slander and Libel!

This complaint is absurd, and both slanderous and libelous to the the two owners of the South Carolina Film Institute. The Institute is a registered non-profit corporation that is working hard to bring Hollywood to Columbia and the surrounding areas. Its casting call for "Proverbs the Movie" attracted interest from 3 or 4 states. And, yes, I'm a "charter" member.

The author of the complaint should clearly check his facts before he puts comments like this in writing. Yes, the furniture in the office isn't up to that of your typical Hollywood production office, but it's a start! Want proof of the sincerity and repuation of the SC Film Institute? I just assisted the Institute - along with 30 other people - in producing an anti-gang commercial for the Richland County Sheriff's Office using a courtroom at the County Courthouse. We were warmly received, and got a lot of interest from the deputies who were working with us in the courtroom.

While I'm a big fan of RipOff Report, I'm formally requesting that the Report remove this particular complaint or the Institute will consider taking legal action to have it removed.

I am a member the South Carolina Film Institute. I have been involved in several of their projects. They are a legit film institute and I would recommend any serious filmmaker/actor/actress contact them if they are interested in pursuing a career in the industry. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I responded to an ad on Craig's List to join a group of film makers called "The South Carolina Film Institute." I googled the name and came up with the "Carolina Film Institute." The Carolina film institute is based in Greenville, sc and the South Carolina Film Institute is based in Columbia. I was confused too!

As it turns out , the South Carolina Film Institute is a relatively new non-profit with a mission of building the film industry within South Carolina. I spent the massive $15 and joined... I understand that to some people $15 is a LOT of money, but it goes to sustain the basic operation of the institute.

I've spent three and a half years refining my skills as an editor, colorist, and cinematographer. Being from a small town, it's been extremely difficult to network with anyone with similar interest. Finding actors, directors, producers, and post production people in the same place I thought would only happen in LA or New York. Well...

In the week since I joined, I've been on three shoots, on different locations with two producers, five actors, two editors, one DP, three grips, two graphic artist, a 3D effects specialist, and a director. I couldn't have dreamed a better place to be! Everyone is passionate about their fields of interest, knowledgeable, and at the same time willing to learn!

In 30 days, I qualify to apply for an artist residency in which the winner lives in-house with several other artist to eat, sleep, and breath film for a year. This group is the best thing to happen for me in three and a half years!

Some of the people are a little rough around the edges, but so am I at times. I say, "It's not where you start... It's where you finish!"

#6REBUTTAL Owner of company

Our reputation speaks beyond leaps and bounds for this state. As an owner of South Carolina Film Institute and Great Films at (GreatFilms.tv) I have done so many things to build a great reputable.

Company hightlights:

-Last Film  created by South Carolina Film Institute was accepted by the Film Festival in New York City set to World Premiere July 2014.

-We have a Studio Residency program for Artists @2302 Devine Street as weel

-We also have 2 undisclosed Artist Residencies for Artists/Filmmakers

-South Carolina is a non-profit member benefit organization similar to other programs nationally like the Sundance Film Institute and the Tribeca Film Institute who are also member benefit organizations.

-There is a $15 membership fee for all participants

I see a potential person is upset because we have a requirement to have a buskers permit which the city of COLUMBIA requires us to have as indiviuals which is another $15.

A total of $30 will get you into living the life of a filmmaker and if $30 is considered a ripoff or a scam to learn about filmmaking from real filmmakers with success as filmmakers than that person never wanted to be a filmmaker in the first place....
