I answered an ad for a sales job.  I was working in another area of residential construction but was interested in a change.  I met with the local sales manager, Gil Clark, then met with the national sales manager, Leaman Griffin.  I was hired and encouraged to leave my other job immediately.  I was promised one week of training but received training for part of one day.  I was also told I would soon go to the plant/mill for additional training but that never happened.  Selling log homes is usually a long term sale but I had been working only three weeks and I closed my first sale.    It isn't like someone going to a car lot, picking one out and driving it home that day.  What they don't tell you is that if you don't close a sale in 90 days you will be terminated.  I left a paying job, worked with Southland less than five months and was terminated without any notification.  I went to work one day and was told I was through and to clean out my desk.  I had several clients in the process of closing when I was forced out.  I can only assume some of them were closed by my manager.  I am now awaiting my first ever unemployment check and it is two weeks before Christmas.  Southland Log Homes says they won't be beaten in price but the reason they are hard to sell is because, by the time you add it all up and pay exorbitant prices for freight, they are way over priced and the customers purchase from another company.  Southland would like us to believe they are an "All American, Mom, baseball and apple pie" company but, since their owners are in India, it's just another foreign owned, cut-throat company.

I commented on the character of Gil Clark. Wanted to let the public know that this is not the Gil Clark I was thinking it was. Wrong person and I don't know this guy!

#3UPDATE EX-employee responds

Wed, February 18, 2015

I was an ex-employee of Gil Clark in another business years ago. I don't anything about this Leaman Griffin, but I can assure you the Gil Clark I knew and worked for would never intentionally mislead or scam anyone. However, I am very sorry you had this experience. The sales industry as I'm sure you are aware of is ruthless and brutal. I can't help to notice you mentioned getting a sale after 3 weeks, that's great! If they had a 90 deal closing window as a condition of employment, I'm sure it was retro and if you worked 5 months with only that one sale. Well, I think you know where I am going with this. I am truly sorry this job didn't work out for you. I think if a business had feelings then it would probably jump off a cliff.

I posted that the parent company of Southland Log Homes was in India.  That is what I was told when I worked there.  The truth is that the parent company is in Bahrain and is an Islamic bank.  I guess India sounds better than Bahrain.
