A practice manager at a veterinary hospital went to look at cats with 4 young children.  She was talked into taking a dog that is wonderful with children and so sweet.  And, oh yeah, the dog has a limp because it is fat.  It doesn't take a veterinarian (which I am) to know you do NOT limp because you are fat- you limp because you have an orthopedic disease and being fat can make it worse.  The entire family was so severely attached to the dog just after having her in the home overnight.  The dog has severe arthritis in both elbows.  The orthopedic surgeon said it was grade 3 arthritis due to elbow dysplasia.  The dog has a chance of being so painful within the next 2 years that the 4 children have to go through euthanasia of a dog that can no longer walk.  The woman's husband is often out of town and she will not be able to life a 96# dog that cannot walk.  FYI, dog isn't even obese, just a little overweight.  The ONLY cure is elbow transplant surgery which costs $4000-6000 per elbow and has an 8 week recovery time for each elbow!!  I tried calling them and they refused to have a manager or veterinarian talk to me because they were too busy.  I can take my time out of my busy schedule to examine a lame dog they adopted out as healthy, email radiographs to a boarded surgeon, and call the SPCA and they cannot take out their time to even talk to me.  I left a voice mail for the manager with my cell number and clinic number and she couldn't even have the decency to call me back!
