Chris, I sure hope you mail a copy of this report to as many executive addresses at the bank as possible, as well as the lovely bank rep who behaved so unprofessionally and in such a childish state of fury. She absolutely needs to be fired, she has no place conducting any kind of customer relations activities. If they NEED your social security number, truly legally need it, then the bank rep should be able to calmly, reasonably and EASILY explain to you why this account is an exception that cannot use just the Federal Tax ID number. A bank rep who cannot explain herself AT ALL, wads up paperwork in a rage, and screams a highly inflammatory statement such as terrorists needs to be terminated. NOT TO MENTION the anger management lololol! Lord, I hope she's nobody's mother. One more thing - if you do complain, and you really should because she will do this to others if you let her get away with it - I'd move my accounts FIRST, if you haven't already. I wouldn't put it past a bank that would allow such incompetence in an employee to also allow that employee, or her friends, to wreak havoc with your account if it isn't moved. Actually, I'd move the account anyway, if this is the kind of incompetence the bank chooses to present to their customers as a 'professional'. Good luck, I really hope you come out on top.

But here's my understanding of the Patriot Act requirements for new business accounts: the bank has to reasonably determine that the business entity exists and reasonably determine that the authorized signers are who they say they are. The signers would need to provide non-expired government-issued photo id#s, like a drivers license. I don't think a social security number is needed at all. However, an exception would be a sole-proprietorship. But since you have a separate tax ID# for the business, you must have a corporation or partnership. Possibly another exception might be for businesses that report lots of cash, as the gov't requires social security numbers on anyone (could even be the janitor!) depositing over $10K in a day. So, one questions: hat industry is your business? No matter what though, no one deserves the treatment you got!
