News And Views. Sweetness And Light?

Americans are starting to wise up to the dangers of the artificial sweetener NutraSweet, Chemicaly known as apartame. The bad news is that they seem to be falling for a new sweetener, Splenda (sucralose), created by tweaking sugar with chlorine. The structure of the sugar molecule receives three chlorine molecules in place of three hydroxyl groups.

An Associated Press article told how McNeil Nutritionals, a JOhnson&Johnson company, wants consumers to use Splenda in baking as it browns nicely and sweetens foods with no calories.

"No calories" sounds tempting, but Dr. Joseph Mercola warns that animal studies on sucralose have shown:

** Shrunken thymus glands ( up to 40 percent shrinkage)

** Enlarged liver and kidneys

** Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus

** Reduced growth rate

**Decreased red blood cell count

** Aborted pregnancy

** Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights

** Diarrhea

And ther are no NO long-term studies for this chemical concoction. Starbucks has announced it will offer Splenda to it's customers, and baking enthusiasts can purchase a 2-pound bag of a Splenda/sugar mixture for am mere $6.29. Chlorinated sugar? We'll pass!

ARTIFICAL SWEETENERS ARE BAD FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE

I WAS SUFFERING MIGRAINES, DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS AND SHORT-TERM MEMORY LOSS.

I WAS ALSO DRINKING DIET COKES AND EATING ARTIFICIALLY SWEETENED ITEMS  TRYING TO KEEP MY WEIGHT DOWN SO I WON'T GET THE DIABETES THAT RUNS IN MY FAMILY.

I WAS GETTING SICKER UNTIL I SAW SOMETHING ON THE "700 CLUB: TV PROGRAM ABOUT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAUSING PROBLEMS IN PEOPLE -- ESPECIALLY NATIVE AMERICANS.

I AM NO BELIEVER IN TELEVANGELIST NONSENSE BUT PAT ROBERTSON WAS DESCRIBING EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO ME. FOR ONCE, ONE OF THEM TOLD THE TRUTH.

I STOPPED EATING AND DRINKING ITEMS CONTAINING ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS AND I GAINED SOME WEIGHT BUT I THINK A LOT BETTER NOW AND WHAT WOULD IT GAIN ME TO BE THE THINNEST CORPSE IN THE BOX?

I ALSO CUT OUT MSG AND INCREASED TUMERIC AND SPICES IN STEAD  OF SALT AS MUCH AS I COULD. YOU ALSO HAVE TO READ LABELS CLOSELY THESE DAYS.

James said We'll pass! It seems as though many people didn't get his memo. Take a trip to the grocery store and you will see that Splenda is everywhere. People are buying it too, and why shouldn't they? I've yet to see an objective study that proves it is any more dangerous than any of the other sweeteners out there (including sugar). The only so-called evidence out there against Splenda is the list James posted. A lot of the opposition to Splenda actually comes from its competitors (no surprise there) or someone with something to sell. As for Dr. Mercola, don't believe for a moment that this guy is objective. This is the internet; anyone can call himself a doctor. Furthermore, his website is a business; he has something to sell and (amazingly), it competes with Splenda! One last thing: these people that get all worked up over Splenda's chlorinated sugar molecule have a lot to learn about chemistry. Manipulated molecules are everywhere; man does it and so does nature; the fact is, some manipulated molecules are safe, some are not, and it doesn't matter whether their origins are man or nature. So don't panic just because someone says that Splenda is chlorinated sugar. (And for those that would wonder, no, I have no vested interest in this issue. I just simply detest knee-jerk responses to new things.)
