Last week, I was contacted by a super nice woman who told me my office controller had referred her to me as the one in charge of office supplies. She told me she was relocating her office to Kentucky and trying to sell her office supply stock. She said "Jane" told her we use a lot of certain items - Post-it notes, pens, tape, highlighers - and began rattling off the normal cost and her discounted cost. She was talking so fast, I couldn't keep up. I really had no idea what my total would be but knew if the discounted prices were that cheap, it wouldn't hurt to have a surplus on hand. Then she told me she was going to stuff a Cross pen in the box for me. She said she would put my name on the box and to make sure I looked for it and didn't lay it down by the copier for someone to take. I felt a little uneasy because her "shpill" almost sounded like a skit, and she laughed nervously at any hint of amusement.
Today I received two boxes packed with the supplies we had discussed. However, there was no invoice and I wanted to make sure I didn't miss it, so I asked "Jane" if she remembered the woman's name. She told me she had never talked to anyone and given them my name. I telephoned the "voice" number on the packing slip and received the message that all operators were busy assisting others and left my name, number and concern. I did notice that the voice recording did not sound like a company located in Paducah, KY; it was not Southern nor was the woman who telephoned me.
Something told me to look on the internet for this company's website. That's when I found this site and multiple reports of almost identical scenarios. I have packed the office supplies back up and will wait for the invoice. I am expecting it to exceed what my normal office supply vendor charges and will perhaps ship everything back C.O.D.
Oh, and I did find the Cross pen tucked away, but the box is all ratty - like it has been in stock for a while.
