Starving Students arrived on their job at my apartment so late that we were going to miss our service elevator reservation time allotted, which would have been a disaster. I explained to the movers that my goods were very valuable and to use the most caution they could. As we were in danger of having the elevator locked in the crux of the move, movers decided to "shrink wrap" items at the loading dock, rather than at my apartment, as written in the contract.

Meanwhile, the movers (whom I believe were drunk) scratched my travertine floors, nearly broke off a leg of my Natuzzi sofa (save for my stopping them). I noted that one guy was moving the marble from an antique bombe so unsteadily that he tipped it over and it shattered. I asked him to load the crumbles so that it could be reproduced but he failed to do so, compromising my security deposit with the building and leaving me with the task of picking it up and cleaning it up.

Then we parted ways so I could no longer prevent disaster, nor did I know that in fact, they did not shrink wrap anything. Needless to say, the antiques arrived scratched and chipped. The movers, to their credit, did admit to these wrong-doings and helped repair a dresser whose tracks became bent in the journey. I filed a report on the spot noting the most damaged set of antiques, uncontested by the movers.

So why would I be denied proper compensation for......? Because Melanie Thompson, the crook claims adjuster, fights even admitted wrong-doings by the company and turns the blame onto the customer whose goods are now shattered, scratched, chipped, etc. She even chastised me for my stupidity in letting the drunken movers proceed with the move at what I considered to be the point of no return. Then she sarcastically accused me of lying in desperation.

Even pettier than imaginable, I relayed to her my discontent with her failure to return calls as I waited, blocking off time away from my young children, to answer her call. Her response: "Oh come on, this is a cell isn't it. You're not sitting there waiting" . Granted,  I was no picnic to speak to after finding that her compensation for the myriad of damages totaled $87.00 based on our contract of 60cents per pound x the lightest item destroyed.

Apparently, it was not enough that the movers themselves admitted to being responsible for those damages and failing to shrink wrap, Melanie Thompson wants me to prove it to her so that she can call me a liar and fail to compensate me.

In concluding my ordeal with Starving Students, I experienced the human side of Melanie Thompson, who is not so bad after all. She, on a daily basis, relives the customer response of "everything has been ruined" once they have found out that the contract allows reimbursement in terms of weight (based on the contract).
My suggestion to the company:
Send the contract ahead of time so that the customer is not under duress and paying for every minute they might look at it thereby being able to decide which insurance they might need.

Educate the workers about how to move without destroying

Have random drug and alcohol tests

Advice to Public:
Do not use this company

I have moved 30 times in my life and have never had such problems!

To Melanie:
I am so sorry for calling you a "crook". You were just doing your job without sensitivity to me.
I am sure your career will be fruitful and that your "hands are tied" in most cases.
I wish you the best and hope this message will reach the public to undo some of the damage it has cause you personally.

You claim to have expensive furniture and antiques.
You hire starving students to move your stuff?
What the h**l do you expect?

While I do not condone shoddy work ethics or incompetence do you really think hiring the cheapest movers available was a wise choice?

Spend some money the next time and pay for quality.......
