Student Relations Inc - SRI Warnings before signing on Delray Beach, Florida
Before signing on with these folks, there are some things of which you should be aware:
First - This is a straight up "knock-knock" cold-call assignment. I, for one, was not fully aware of this before accepting their offer. Had I realized this, I never would have signed on with them, since cold calling is not in my comfort zone;
Second - You must sign a contract stating that you are an independent contractor. However, most of the requirements of the position violate the definition of such independent contractor status. To legally be considered an independent contractor, the company cannot require you to work certain hours, and, cannot restrain you from working for other companies in the same industry. In fact, an independent contractor is defined as one who "customarily performs similar duties for other companies in that, or other, industries";
Third - You are required to call in 4 times a day (8:30, 11:00, 1:00 & 5:00). Not much room there for independence;
Fourth - There are draconian provisions in the contract. One of which states that if you terminate your relationship with them within the first 60-days, they can charge you a fee of up to $500 in order to train someone to take your place. Since the entire training consisted of a 90-minute conference call, that seems a little hefty to me. And, it is this provision that they are using as a pretext to not pay me for the 8 days that I spent in the field for them.
If you enjoy knocking on doors in a straight cold call, scripted, micro-managed situation and are sure that you can do it for a minimum of 60-days, no matter what, then go for it.
Otherwise, think again....
