Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I started working for the owner Mr. Marshall as a personal favor. J got his start in the business as a salesman (which he is very good at) but, as I found out later, he consistently failed to follow through on his promises. Orginally, Mr. Marshall asked me to simply supervise 2 Mexican brothers. I was told I could take a book and that I was not expected to do any physical work.

Mr. Marshall was unable to show respect to these two and was therefore unable to effectively supervise them so they returned the lack of respect by purposfully refusing to work at the same time, taking extended breaks, taking double time for lunch, having to take 1/2 hr bathroom breaks with supposed cramps, getting "lost" in transit, failing to show up without notice, showing up late, failing to follow expressed directions etc. I quickly saw this was an impossible situation and suggested that Mr. Marshall use me exclusively.

As it was, the three of us were getting paid but no more than one person was working at any one time. By doing it by myself Mr. Marshall therefore saved $20 an hour $10 for lunch he didn't have to pay them and $5 he never compensated me for lunch. In addition, I was on time every day, followed instructions, worked smarted and more effectively, didn't take frequent breaks, didn't take lunch (if I ate it was something I brought and ate while I worked), didn't get "lost" etc.

In other words I saved j a ton of money! I had extensive contact with customers and sub-contractors and found out almost without exception that they had serious complaints about j's business practices. It was common for j to promise someone something one day and then change later. One digger told me they had come to an agreement about the pool's dimensions and set up flags to outline the work area. The next day when he brought his back h*e to do the work he found that j had added new flags and extended the pools dimansions substantially.

Since they had agreed on a price he was being asked to do the extra work for free. Since he was already there had not scheduled any other jobs that day he figured he might as well go ahead and finish the job anyway but he was very wary thereafter. I could go on and on but let this serve as an example. I was being paid under the table so j avoided IRS and disability and unemployment costs.

I live in the North County of San Diego, CA and I had my pool built about 2 years ago.Having dealt with crooked workers in the past I am always careful who I have do any work at my home. So as you could imagine how concerned a person like myself would be while having a pool & spa built for cost that they go for.

I had such a great experience working with Superior. They did an excellent job in a prompt time frame. About a month and my backyard turned from eye sore to eye candy! The neighbors are jealous and my family as well. If I move I will definitely use superior again:.) Im sure if I shopped for a little longer i might have found it a little cheaper maybe? But in saving money would I have been losing quality?

The pricing with Superior was definitely reasonable for the quality of service, showmanship, and family based honesty. At no time did I get the expendable little guy feeling that happens when you work with successful companies of this caliber.

This company has been around for like 20 or 30 years and I can see why. They were awesome!

First of all--I don't pay workers to just sit around.  A supervisor leads by example, not with a book.  Secondly, a supervisor who can't get control over his workers shouldn't be working for me.  Those two brothers described still work for me on occasion and usually do an exemplary job.  That's why they are still around.  I don't remember hiring anyone to watch over them, since they have their own car, and get the job done.  I don't know of many businesses that pay for a guys gas/time to get to his work, buy him lunch, etc.  I do require that all workers take at least a 30 minute lunch break--longer when its over 100 degrees.

When we layout a pool, we've NEVER used flags, so that raises some questions about the legitimacy of this complaint.  We haven't subcontracted our pool excavation in four years (as of 09') and have had ONLY the one excavation crew working for us. Frankly, I can't remember this employeeif he even exists. It is common practice for a customer to change the shape, length, and width of a pool as we layout on the groundit's their pool , not mine.

Our BBB record speaks for itself--2 complaints in 25 years is unheard of for a company of our size.  In the past three years we've won the "Best of San Diego" Union-Tribune readers poll and came in second place twice.  Our customer satisfaction is constantly rated in the top echelon of pool contractors time, and time again. Superior Pools strives to treat our employees with respect, as an integral part of our family business. Most of our employees have been working with us for over 20 yearssome second generation. Read this complaint twice and you'll see the absurdity in it.

Sincerely,

Jack Marshall
