I had my car towed to Surgical Auto for repairs of a broken axle. They quoted me for the towing, parts and labor ($698.01). However, my car was newly purchased and the seller agreed to supply the part(s). Which brought the labor and towing to $446.20.
When i dropped off the parts (the rear end of a 2000 Land Rover Discovery) I explained that the seller sent the rear end recommending the entire rear end be replaced instead of the 1 broken axle. Sandra off the too of her head told me that that takes longer (about 3-4 hours) to do than replacing 1 axle and it would cost me over $600 in labor alone. Since then I've spoken with 3 different mechanics who confirmed that it's much simpler to detach the rear end and replace it... than to go into the differential and pull out a broken axle. And that 3-4 hours is excessive for such a change.
In any case, I accepted Sandra's recommendation and only had the axle replaced. i informed her that i would pick up the remaining pieces of the rear end when I picked up the car (differential, driveshaft, axle, etc.). The night i picked up the car, she asked me to come back for the rear end, since it was late and they were beyond their normal closing time. I said no problem. When I returned for the remaining pieces, the calipers and roters were missing. When I asked Donald about them, he told me that he had junked it and his plan was to junk this, as well. So I took what was left over and left.
3 days later I drove down to DC and then back up. On my return trip I noticed that the rear tires had burned down to the fabric. I called Sandra to let her know what was happening and she told me that it wasn't there fault. That it was impossible to put an axle in incorrectly and they couldn't be help liable. In the end I paid another mechanic $300 to replaced the entire rear end. He also confirmed that the axle was placed incorrectly; causing more weight to shift on the part of the tire that wore completely down.
I would never recommend this place to anyone. Anything could've happened on the 95. They placed my life, my child's life and everyone else driving around me's life in danger. And when I addressed this with them they did not take responsibility for their actions.
