I think this is only my second bad review on a business ever because I really don’t base my overall opinion on a place from only one visit. Tan republic I had only visited one time. I was a new customer and received 10 free tans through my email. I was about to go on a vacation a few weeks after and since I don’t tan that much, I decided to try out the 10 free ones and see how I enjoyed the place. I walked in and spoke with Patrick who showed me the prices. He said he could give me a deal of only $49/month any bed since I came in with a promotion. I don’t tan often but it was near the beginning of Fall and figured it may be a good deal to take then in case I decided to go more during the season.
That afternoon when I got home, I was filing the contract and noticed a section that said “can’t cancel until November 2017.” I was confused because Patrick never said anything like that. I have never been to a tanning or any other salon that tied you to their contract. I was confused by this so I called Tan Republic. No one ever answered so I left a voicemail. I also left two emails on their online system. I called the next morning and left another message. I finally talked to a girl at the front desk and she said I could only talk to Patrick about my membership since he was the one who sold me the membership. She said he moves around to different locations and she didn’t know his schedule. She wasn’t allowed to give me his contact info so she said she would try to get a hold of him. She called me back shortly after and said she left some messages. It was about a week and a half of continuous calling and emailing and still no response. I got in contact Zach’s number (the guest services manager.) I was on vacation when he called me and he left a message saying I did sign up for a year contract and that I was two late to cancel since they had a 3 day policy. I was very frustrated because there was no way I could cancel with the salon unless I had talked to Patrick who never called me back. I left Zach a message expressing my frustration and he never called me back.
When I returned from vacation, I continued to try to get a hold of Patrick or Zach and left multiple emails. Patrick finally called me back one day and was extremely rude and said he had told me about not being able to cancel (which I know he didn’t). I tried to be as nice as possible and told him I honestly wouldn’t have signed up if I knew it was a year contract. As a full time student and employee I personally don’t have the time or need to tan all year. He quickly said, “I will ask Zach and see what he wants to do about this,” and then hung up on me. I was in shock at how rude he was. I have never had anyone hang up on me, let alone an actual manager of a business!
I tried to get a hold of Zach for about 1-2 weeks after the call and still nothing. I talked to 2 different receptionists saying that they “understand that their policy can be confusing,” and they both even said not to take Zach’s attitude personal and that he is like this a lot with his customers. I had both receptionists at different times email and call Zach and Zach said he would call me back. He never did. My husband got involved and called Zach a bunch of times as well. Zack of course called him back really quick. Long story short, he said there was nothing he could do except for use the contract or get out of it for $500. I of course didn’t want a cent going to that business so we paid to get out of it.
I don’t think this even comes close with expressing my frustration at this business. I feel like they really do try to rip you off along with having no customer service skills whatsoever. I know that I will NEVER be stepping close to this place again and I will make sure that I tell many people about this terrible experience so that they don’t have to suffer through the same thing.
