I am a female, single parent, one car household. Tanner transmission came and got my pickup to diagnose and repair what I thought was just a clutch problem. After having it three days they called and said it was the clutch and transmission. they quoted me a price of 1963.15, which was supose to include a clutch kit and transmission rebuild. This took one week.

When I picked up my truck the reciept says transmission repair not transmission rebuild and I could still hear noises comming from the clutch and could smell something and there was grease all over my seat cover and carpet. I got it home and sat and listened to it and decided the noises were just not right and got out to listen and found that it was leaking all over the place. I called the manager of the shop (Rick) and he said to bring it back. After looking at it He decided that the slave cylinder had blown out and need to be replaced. So he had a mechanic drive me, in my truck, to the parts store to get the part.

On the way down there this mechanic (Mike) told me a part had been left out of my truck, that he saw it sitting on the counter.

He used foul language if front of my child and bad mouthed his boss stating that his boss is a jerk and other foul names.

He drives us back to the shop over reving my engine the whole way and Rick says they can put he part in in 20 minutes, so I wait. Then he comes in and tells me that they broke the hydraulic line getting it off and cant get another till monday.

All of this time I have had to find a ride to work and a way to get my child to school, and now I have to go the weekend without a car also.

Monday I call after work and he says they are cleaning it up he'll call when its done. I go to school to meet with a teacher and this mechanic (mike) calls on my cell and says he is waiting at my house for me. He drives me back to the shop in my truck to drop him off and on the way there I ask him if that part got put back in and he said yes, I also asked him if there was a higher chance of my master cylinder blowing out now that all this other stuff has been replaced. He told me no, that rick had told him to pickup a new master cylinder while he was picking up the hydraulic line and put it on for me. We get there and he takes my keys and puts them on Ricks desk so I went in and had to wait for Rick to come in his office to get my keys and I ask him why he deciced to replace the master cylinder and he says he didnt that there isnt a new one and he didnt tell Mike any of that.

I walk back out to my pickup and notice its leaking all over the place, so here we o again. Rick send Mike out to look and Mike says its brake fluid so Rick looks and says it hydraulic fluid and tells me what has PROBABLY happened is that when the slave cylinder blew out it got hydraulic in the casing of the bellhousing and is leaking from the seep hole and should be all gone by the time I get home, so I head home I live two towns away from this shop. I get home and notice the gease is still all over my carpet, they havent clean up anything on my truck, it is still making noises and it is still leaking and the clutch feels spongey, just doesnt feel right. So I get under the pickup clean things off and find 3 places it is leaking from, call Rick back and tell him this is a bunch of bull and I want my truck fixed right. He says they will come and get it in the morning and is short and rude with me on the phone.

So im still asking a neighbor for rides and I call after work on Tuesday to see if its done and he says he didnt send anyone to het it he just sent a different mechanic to look at it at my house. He told me that this mechanic (Jake) took the slave cylinder off to check it and checked my clutch and told him it wasnt leaking, there is nothing wrong with the clutch and he couldnt hear anything. So I go home drve my pickup two blocks and back, it is still making noises and the clutch is only about half what it should be and that half is spongey and it is STIll leaking! My neighbors said that Jake was only here about 20 minutes and that he didnt take anything off of the truck and he sat and grinded gears getting it into reverse, was gone about 5 minutes in it and left. My neighbors have wittnessed the leaks, noises, and how much clutch I dont have.

I call Rick back and he keeps asking me to describe the leaks and the fluid that is comming from it and that all he can do is come and get it and take the trans out again and send it back to Salt Lake and he'll send someone after it tomorrow. My sister passed away and I need to leave town so I tell him Ill call him When I get back in town. I had ask him for his bosses # and if there was a loner car I could use the last time they took it and he said no but that if I had a complaint I could call 466-3169.

So I call this number and Jim answers and ask what I need and I ask him who I need to talk to about a problem and he gets real rude and says "Well I guess me, I answered the phone didnt I." I start to tell him my complaint and he interupts and says I ned to talk to Blaine Tanner and he isnt in, So I ask when He'll be in and he says after 1pm tomorrow. I have called there four different days at all times and have gotten, Hes not here, put on hold and not returned to, he just left with someone, hes gone for the day, dont know if he got your message or not, put in hold for two seconds and then told he doesnt answer his paige and by this time it is Friday Sept. 4th and a holiday weekend coming up, so thats two weeks and 3 days they have had my pickup, 4 trips to the shop and a mechanic sent to my house and I still dont have it back to see if they even fixed it right yet.

I call Rick and ask him why his mechanic would tell him its not leaking when it clearly was and if they can help me with a vehicle to get to work in since they havent been able to repair my truck after four tries and that I could lose my job over this. I even told him I called our public bus transportation and there isnt a bus that stops within 2 1/2 miles of my work and he told me thats not his problem and no they cant help me. I asked if some of my money was going to be refunded and he kept putting me on hold then he told me he knows that Im not happy with them or their work and that I probably wont be and there is nothing he can do about it and hung up on me. I dont trust their work either. I also asked him if there was any way it would be done by Tuesday morning and he said he doupted it since they werent gong to work over the holiday weekend.

I told him I didnt think it was fair That I had to cancel my holiday plans and be stuck home without a vehicle over their neglagence and he told me that wasnt his problem either. I have called for Blaine Tanner at least a dozen times and have left messages and have only gotten the runaround and no return call from my message. All of the stuff that was said to me in person by Rick or the Mechanic Mike was wittnessed by my child and all the trips back and forth to the shop and the leaks and noises and the spongey clutch has been wittnessed by four and more of my neighbors. When I asked Rick why his mechanic would tell him it wasnt leaking he very rudely said "Well he told me it wasnt leaking hydraulic fluid."

Whats that supose to mean??? did he know all along that it was tranmission fluid and just wasnt going to say or do anything about it? All 4 times it was always the same fluid never hydraulic fluid. Ther is more but this is the just of it.

Utah,
RIPOFF or INCOMPETENCE?

#2General Comment

Tanner transmission in Sunset Utah either tried to scam me or they are incredibly incompetent.  I have a 2004 Ram 3500 with the 48re transmission.  Out of nowhere when I left my house the other day my truck had a huge delayed shift out of first gear.  This truck had no prior symptoms and I had just hat a full transmission service done at the dodge dealership 6 months earlier.  I called Tanner Transmission and they told me that they would perform a free diagnostics so I took it to them.  A couple hours later I received a call back from them.  The technician explained that they had run a full diagnostics and concluded that it was definitely an internal problem causing my shifting problems.  He said that they had checked all the adjustments and electrical sensors and they all checked out ok.  He needed me to authorize $650 for them to do an internal inspection to determine the problem.  I asked for a worst case estimate and was told that it could be anywhere between $1000 and $3000, but they wouldn’t know until they take a look.  He assured me that they would only replace the parts that needed to be replaced and wouldn’t charge me for unneeded repairs.

So, I told him I would call him back to let him know how I wanted to proceed.  In the meantime, my wife ran a better business bureau inquiry and found that they had over 20 serious complaints.  And additionally I was told by a friend who overheard that I had my truck at Tanner and he was very adamant that they scammed a relative of his for several thousand dollars.

I decided to go pick up my truck and get other opinions.  When I picked up my truck the technician told me again that it was definitely internal and mentioned that they had eliminated the common problems sensors and solenoids.  He emphasized that they were the best around and had the most experience.

The next morning I thought I would run a quick Google search for the symptoms I was experiencing and within seconds found several hits and youtube videos with a simple solution to my problem.  They all said it was the governor pressure solenoid and pressure sensor.  It was all over the internet that this is a very common problem on the 48re transmission.  I decided to take the gamble and picked up the two parts.  Between the two it was about $100.  It took me about 45 minutes to replace these parts and when I was done my truck shifted like a champ once again.

So, my conclusion is that Tanner Transmission either tried to scam me or they are an incredibly incompetent transmission repair shop.  If I can find that this particular transmission has a very common problem in a couple of minutes, one would think that a business that specialized in the field would have this figured out.  If they were just honest with me I would have paid a few hundred dollars for them to fix it.

  Shame on you Tanner Transmission!

I had heard from my neighbor who got his car rebuilt from these guys. He told me that they have a bad reputation for doing work that isn't necessary and cheating customers. The Sunset location would tell customers that their transmissions needed to be rebuilt when they only needed to have a pan gasket replaced or a cooler line repaired. Then they would sell unneccessary repairs and hold the vehicle hostage until they paid up.

As a consumer I wanted you to you know that I read your complaint and sympathize with you. A few avenues you could persue. 1)Tanner Transmisions is a member of ATRA(automatic transmission rebuilders association)and they have a code of ethics they supposedly abide by. You can file a complaint with them. 2)file a complaint with utah dept of commerce 3)file a complaint with utah attorney generals office 4)file a complaint with BBB. I looked this company up and found they do indeed have an unsatisfactory record. 5)small claims court 6)make you a sizable ledgable sign that can be read by passing motorists. Get your friends and family involved and go picket the nearest busy intersection closes to the owners office. I know if I just got took for 2k I would be doing that at least one day a month til they made things right with me. 7)Always pay with a credit card so that you can back charge it when they dont provide the service you paid for. Always shop arround and get a competitive price qoute in writing and compare. Always remember to get a signed copy of your invoice with the correct information on it. if they refuse to do that then call the cops on them. Always make sure a mechanic has a valid "ASE" certification in the automotive area you are seeking services for. Any good reputable shop will post thier mechanics ASE credentials in the lobby within easy viewing distance. If thier certification is more than 5 years old they are not valid and chances are they are not up to date with the ever increasing technical know how in order to perform thier job properly. PS due to Tanners Transmissions poor business practices.. I'm going elsewhere for now on.

Terri, Thank you for speaking up. I phoned into Tanner today and tried to get an estimate for comparison some transmission work I was having performed. I believe that I actually spoke with ONE of the GUYS you mentioned in the report above. Talking about rude! I asked for a ball park figure on completely replacing the transmission, not just repairing. He said that It was impossible to do give me an estimate without bringing in the truck. Isn't that what they do? He wanted to drop my tranny and just repair it. I told him no. I told him that I could get a rebuilt tranny from Autozone. He got very rude and insited that Autozone couldn't get one for me. After an exchange of argumentative comments, he continued to refuse giving an estimate for what I was asking. He continued treating me like an idiot and I told him that he wouldn't get my business. They are in business because of consumers. treat us with respect please!

the pilot bearing in my vehicle went out before the warranty was up and after arguing with Jim Tanner and Rick and faxing proof of warranty, and asking for it to be fixed by one of the other shops and request refused, etc. etc. I took it to be fixed by the same shop. Needless to say they were pretty upset about my ripoff report, I told Rick if he made things right with me, or my vehicle anyway, that I would make things right for them here. Well, they did put in a new pilot bearing and he said because of the damage from the bearing he had to put in another new clutch, but...they wouldnt warranty this "new" clutch, it had to ride out the old warranty which had only about two weeks or so left on it. Although the company that makes the cluthes they use {LUKE} warranty them for a year they wouldnt warranty this one. That should tell us something about the faith they have in their own repairs. When I took it bake for its 2 week chekup this time I told rick it was still making the same noise that his mechanic told me last time all new clutches made, which by the way was a noise that was never there until they got done with it. Rick pulled it in the bay and drove it, he wouldnt let me ride along so I could point things out to him, said it was against co. policy?...but it wasnt on the first 2 week checkup? He messed around with the gears and stuff in the bay and it cleary made noises it shouldt have. Told me I needed a new u-joint, and said that my pickup is old and bound to make noises, but it wasnt comming from the tranny or clutch. A couple of weeks later I took it in to a trustworthy shop for tires and asked them to check the u-joints, which I also did myself, and they told me nothing was wrong with the u-joints but that I probably better have my clutch looked at. IMAGINE THAT ! I bought this vehicle brandnew, I now it very well, all its noisesand such, the original clutch and tranny lasted me 15+ years, I learned how to drive in a standard and also drove semi for 15+ years so Im pretty sure its not me. I take very good care of my vehicles or they wouldnt last this long and I planned on keeping this one even longer but now that I let Tanner get there hands on it and havent an extra 2000.00 in my pocket to start over, dont know what to do, but do know to NEVER take anything to Tanner Transmissions if you want it to be fixed right and treated descent. I was also told by Rick that he could go and write a page on me also, well I really wouldnt care, I have witnesses and a paper trail of proof if He wants to go a round with me.
