I am a 57 year old gentleman. I have lived in Chapel Hill since 1968. When possible, I always try to support the local economy. In all this time I have never been treated so poorly by a local merchant. I walked into The Better Sleep Store where I purchased my Temper-Pedic mattress and found a headboard and foot-board style that I liked, but explained to the salesman that I was looking for something in a lighter, cherry wood. He had me browse through a brochure and ordered what appeared to be lighter shaded cherry wood.

Upon arrival the piece was nearly identical in color to the dark mahogany bed at the store that I was not interested in. The headboard and foot-board did not look like cherry color that was pictured in the booklet. I know what cherry, even dark cherry, is supposed to look like. Just about everything in my house is cherry wood including the cabinets. However, the store manager, John Shindler, said that he would not allow me to return it and that he would not even allow me to exchange it. 

Since last Friday, I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the NC Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office. I have also sent a letter to his landlord at Ram's Plaza, posted complaints on City Search and contested the charge with my credit card company. Tomorrow I intend to call Vaughn Basset and tell them my story in hopes that they will intervene.

My warning to others is to avoid The Better Sleep Store. In retrospect, I wish I had taken my glasses and read the fine lawyer print regarding returns, but that is not the point. I did not receive what I ordered!

The owner called me today, apologized for the misunderstanding, said he would have the furniture picked up this Friday and give me a full refund.
