While I'm not knocking the Jewish dietary laws cited earlier, crab meat is no dirtier than any other meat...cleanliness is all in the fishing, the harvesting and processing. And before anyone goes and says vegetarian diets are better - you may be right, but the e-coli scares of late indicate that safe vegetables have the same problems - cleanliness depends on the raising, the harvesting and the processing.

By the time the crab is on the plate, it's all dead. I've been devouring crabs all my life(being from MD), as has my entire family. Not one of use has ever gotten sick from eating crabs. We probably go through about 10 bushels/year...EACH. All of the meat is good. The only issue is whether or not the crabs are already dead before you cook them. THEN there is a health issue. As long as the crab is alive when you toss it into the steamer, there is NO issue.

Crabs are NOT kosher. Jews who follow the dietary laws in the Torah do NOT eat them. Crabs are scavangers. They eat anything and everything! Like cockroaches or garden slugs... There is also some star-shaped ( looks like a small, mucousy, white yucca plant) pale white meaty-looking membrane under their shell called "dead meat" that if you eat it will make you so sick that you will wish you were dead...and some people do die after they eat it. Apparently your server didn't tell you not to eat the "dead meat" -- if you were eating whole crabs, that is. There is d**n little meat under a crab's shell that you can eat. It's just not worth all the picking and effort that it takes! My parents were descended from Jews from Spain, the Shefardi. They did NOT eat CRABS or LOBSTERS or CRAWDADDIES ( CRAYFISH) or OYSTERS or TURTLES or SHELLFISH of ANY KIND. Ditto for DOLPHINS and WHALES! SHRIMP,TOO! Neither do I. I will leave it to you whether or not you want to observe these dietary rules for yourself and your family or not. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, CRAB CAN MAKE YOU VERY,VERY,VERY ILL! I learned this from an exceutive chef who retired from some of New Orleans, Lousiana's most famous and expensive restaurants. Don't go back to that place! Obviously, the kitchen staff and the servers do NOT know about dead meat in crabs and did not prepare it right (like removing the dead meat before it ever saw your table!) or give you the warning about it! Reporting it to Rip Off Report was a step in the right direction!
