My daughter, who is 21 years old, divorced and victim of domestic violence had applied at Coastal Law School and Flats at UNF which was previously known as Flats at Kernan was one of the recommended places to rent for students. July 2014, right before the school started we went to look at the apartment place and she was told from the leasing office that the place is limited and she should sign in however it is not a lease it is just the initial work. And that she will sign the lease at the time she collects the key which will me mid August. She informed at the end of July 2014 that she is not interested but they told her they have already approved her and she cannot cancel the lease and she is liable for next 12 months of rent. She worked with the law firm in Fort Myers at that time she had lawyer friend called there corporate office to resolve the matter by paying few months rents in order to relieve her but it was denied. I reported to Florida Consumer Services and BBB and they could not resolve it. Upto this day we are paying the rent of $745 per month and we do not have the key to the apartment. She never took the possession of the apartment and they refuse to sub lease to anyone else because they are not a full capacity. They will not budge at all. The apartment complex was sold of University of North Florida we even tried to negogiate it but they refuse to help.

This is such a rip off and taking advantage of students who do not have the money to pay for school but have to pay for the apartment which is NOT meant to be. I find it very unusual that how inconsiderate companies are nowadays.

I will never recommend anyone to do business with them. Its a shame now that is own by UNF and they are acting in such a manner. A State School who does not care about the people in own state.

Shame on them!

To the original poster:

I work with the University of North Florida's student media organization, the Spinnaker, and we would like to look into your daughter's complaint about the Flats. As UNF is now in charge of the Flats, any legal issue they have falls under our purview.

Please contact our news department at [email protected] so we can make arrangements.

So YOUR daughter wishes to go in to the field of Law, yet she fails to follow one of the first rules of Law. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING!!!! So THEY are the bad guys because YOUR DAUGHTER did not read what SHE was signing and THEY are holding HER to the terms and conditions of the CONTRACT that she signed. How does that work exactly?? I don't know what kind of BS line YOUR child has fed you, but this is COMMON SENSE!!!! YOU READ WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING!!!!!! IF YOUR DAUGHTER did not read WHAT she was signing then SHE HAS NO ONE TO BLAME BUT HERSELF!!!!! While its admirable that YOU wish to be a great dad and go to bat for her, sometimes YOU cannot protect them from their own mistakes. SHE signed the CONTRACT, that is all this is. YOU however think that SHE should have a pass on the mistakes SHE makes. Sorry but the world doesn't work that way and YOU KNOW IT!!!! Your daughter is a victim of HERSELF!!! She STILL has the option of going and living there. If SHE has to pay the rent then SHE should move in and make this LESS of a burden on herself. I also find that YOU have some screwed up expectations. A school that teaches the Law, yet YOU want them to COMPLETLY IGNORE the CONTRACT she signed in good faith.. FROM YOUR OWN POST>>>>>>>>This is such a rip off and taking advantage of students who do not have the money to pay for school but have to pay for the apartment which is NOT meant to be. I find it very unusual that how inconsiderate companies are nowadays<<<<<<<<<<<<< How can YOU find it "unusual" that THEY are holding YOUR CHILD to a CONTRACT??? Obviously there is enough money for YOUR child to go to school AND pay on an apartment. The ONLY inconsiderate party in all of this is YOUR CHILD!!!!! SHE signed a contract and DID NOT read it and YOU attempt to circumvent said contract and bail her out from the mistake she made. THIS IS NOT ON THE SCHOOL!!!! THEY are ONLY doing what YOUR CHILD told them they could do. WHY you are going after the school when this is 100% YOUR CHILDS FAULT!!! Oh that's right!!! YOU want something for free, which is WHY you made this post. YOU hope to embarrass them into giving you something YOU don't deserve. YOU think that making a online post is going to somehow MAGICALLY cause the CONTRACT she signed to vanish because the school doesn't want bad press. YOU are transparent and YOUR actions are sickening and deplorable. I would give you props on being a good dad, but YOU have just taught your child that its ok to be sleezy online if it gets you your way. Shame on THEM??? No!! SHAME ON YOU!! Shame on YOU for making up a fanciful story. Im pretty sure that if we were to get the schools side of the story, its going to be a polar opposite of YOUR tale of woe. Probably that THEY told your daughter that SHE had to sign this contract to get everything going. THEN something else pops up and in the USUAL female fashion SHE changed her mind. Thinking that SHE was immune from the choices she makes. WHERE DO YOU THINK SHE GETS THIS IRRESPONSIBILITY FROM?????
