Advocating for a senior resident who was former employee. Resident lived in senior independent living community for past 4 years. Maintenance repeatedly failed to repair water leaks through A/C vents, though they "fixed" it four times. I should have called health department then but didn't realize the extent of the problem. I requested that senior (91yo) be relocated to a different apt, and they agreed to find one and move her free of charge. Beyond belief, they moved her to the apt. DIRECTLY below.
Resident and advocate were not aware of the ongoing problems caused by mold in the walls of the whole building until apt. was vacated for 3 weeks while resident was in hospital for one week for surgery and in rehab for the next two. Apt was mostly closed during this time though A/C was set at 78 for cat.
When resident returned to apartment in December - with advocate - both became ill wilthin 3 days. Multiple symptoms resembling flu/bronchitis/GI distress. Several doctors visits and treatments - 3 courses of antibiotics.
Neighbor inquired about possible mold. Advocate took pictures of active mold growth in neighbor's apt. Sent to manager and requested immediate move. Mgmnt brought in "expert" to assess. Assessment was the most basic and inaccurate of all air quality testing methods in the industry.
Mgmnt sent maintenence crew to "repair" the neighbors situation - paint over.
To be continued.
