Complaint Review: The Remodel Pro/Mike Breaux owner - baytown Texas

Around April or May of 2016 we decided to have some repairs and a partial remodel done to our upstairs bathrooms. We located Mike and his company through a website referred by one of the big box hardware stores in town. We met with Mike along with a few other contractors for estimates. We decided to go wih Mike's business because he had many good suggestions and we felt comfortable with him as he was very personable and offered what we felt was a fair price.

Our job was to begin near the end of June 2016. My wife, who is disabled, took out her entire retirement savings to pay for this project. In the beginning of June, we were out of town on vacation and Mike cashed a check we gave him for approx. $5500 for the first installment that he was supposed to hold for about another week until funds were made available. We were then stuck in Leakey, TX and our debit cards were declined for being overdrawn.

The job actually began in the first couple of weeks in July 2016. This project to include resurfacing our stairs along with the two upstairs bathroom work was to take approx. a month or so to our understanding. The hall bath took about a week to include issues with plumbing. The plumber thought there was a leak and tore out a wall to find there was not a leak. Work then began on the master bath shortly thereafter. This is when the nightmare truly began. All in all, this job did not end until approximately January 2017.

There were weeks that would pass after our master bath was dismantled that no one would show up to work at our house. We would call, text and email Mike with no response for days to weeks, and if he did respond he always had an excuse. The vanity we got is not the one we selected, the countertop either. The one that is installed is more expensive than the one we chose. Mike did not consult with us on these changes and then later told us we were over budget after they were installed. He went as far as to sending us an email in December 2016 telling us this and that we owed thousands of dollars more; that he has covered our overages and did not want to ask for more money at Christmas time.

During the master bath remodel a leak sprung and showered our downstairs with water. This was repaired to include a new ceiling fan that clicks all the time since installation. Throughout this project from the delays and hassles with Mike our marriage was teetering from the stress. The only few times we saw Mike was when he would stop by to collect a check for the next installment payment

After the master bathroom was completed, for the most part (flooring transition pieces were not installed), we were glad to have this out of the way and this man out of our lives. The aforementioned staircase job just went by the wayside even though it was included in the original job agreement. In April 2016 I noticed one afternoon a ripple in the sheetrock on my dining room wall. After further investigation we found that there has been an apparent leak from the master shower since the completion of this job. The carpet and baseboard in the master closet are both ruined from mold and there is now drywall work needed downstairs.

So, here we go again, emails and texts were sent to Mike to make right on his work. Little to no response as usual. When he did contact us he first advised his plumber's truck was stolen and another time, on this date, 05/10/2017, approximately a week later,  he stated he is having trouble finding a plumber now that he is retired. I am now going to have to hire my own plumber, drywall, and mold remediation services and pay them with money that I don't particularly have. I am also seeking legal counsel to sue Mike.
