Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

We hired Todd Grehl to do remodeling work at our house and barn.  He and his wife had been close friends for several years.  At his suggestion we agreed that payment would be based on time and material.  We were told that every invoice would include all related receipts - so that we would know "exactly where every dollar went".

The project started out well with Todd paying attention to details - however he gradually spent less and less time on the job - leaving the work to his 3 workers who had no construction experience. We never did get any receipts - he always said that Julie, his wife was getting them together.   Everytime  we questioned (obvious) mistakes, Todd had an answer.  Most of the time it didn't make much sense - but he was a very close friend, so we gave him the benefit of the doubt.

They were away on vacation for at least 4 weeks from September to December.  When he was away, there was no work done. Time was critical because we were replacing a roof and siding. He promised that by the time he went on vacation after Xmas, our barn would be ready for the horses to return and the windows that were to be installed in August, would be in.  Neither occured.  While they were away, we realized that there were major structural issues with their work.  We found structural beams that were not connected to anything,  drains that were not connected to anything.  Gaps in the sheeting and windows that weren't even nailed into place.  There were crooked doorways, walls that weren't straight and shims in just about everything.  They even used nails as shims! It was almost as though they were trying to build it as poorly as they possibly could.

To add insult to injury, I discovered that the billing was about as legitimate as the building.  I was charged for very expensive tools including tools that Todd told my husband were Christmas gifts for his guys.  There were charges for items that that were returned for credit - however my account was not.  There were debit charges with cash back - lunches - materials that were clearly not used on our job.  And lots and lots of "charges" that didn't have receipts.

We've told them that until we are able to see the receipts (as originally promised) we would like all work to stop.  Although they are still supposed to be getting those receipts together, Todd has recently picked up all of his equipment from the job site. I was told that everything would be ready for review today - however my attempts to contact them have gone unanswered.

If you think Todd's work is good....come and see this mess for yourself!!

Almost four years ago, Todd Grehl began construction on an adition to my home. I have had nothing but problems with the work he did complete, not to mention the work he never completed. (some of which was already paid for.)

Here are many of the things that were done incorrectly and/or were never completed. The first floor hardwood floors have huge gaps between the boards. Todd told me it was needed to allow the wood to expand and contract with the weather, but the upstairs floors do not have gaps like that, and i've had a few other builders tell me that they were done incorrectly. Some of the corners of the drywall do not have corner beading, causing separations in the joints in the corners of the walls. In many places, you can see where the dry wall was hung because the screw heads are raised above the paint.

There are several strips of drip edge that were never hung. Parts of the siding of the house do not overlap. The soffet and facia were folded incorrectly so that the water runs into the folds. He didn't put gutters on the new part of the house, which led to the basement drywall getting wet and moldy.

The plumbing in the basement was not done right, and as a result, when my septic tank backed up (not Todd's fault), many pipes came apart, and the sewage injector pump pipe failed because it was installed incorrectly and I had a ton more damage to my home as a result. (Todd's fault)

The railing on the front steps is not screwed into anything on the bottom. The steps in the basement, the front steps, and the side door steps have all fallen apart when someone was walking up/down them because they were built incorrectly. He never came back to grade the yard after he put in the leach bed, and I have a huge mound of dirt and rocks in my pasture that he never took care of. The furnace was not put in correctly, and I've had 2 years of problems with it because of the incorrect installation.

3 of the four racks in the closset that were installed have fallen down...( i guess my mistake was using my closset to hang things!?) I later came to find out they were screwed into the drywall and not the studs of the house. I was supposed to have airconditioning in the first floor new addition to the house, but all that Todd put in was one small vent that is inadequate for enough airflow to cool the room.

One of the sinks in the master bedroom does not drain properly because the fixtures doesn't work. As a result, one of the sinks overflowed, causing damage to the ceiling on the first floor. Todd started to fix the damaged ceiling, but never completed it. He also only tiled part way up the master bath shower, and didn't put a fan in the enclosed shower. the moisture build up caused the paint on the wet board above to bubble and sag. I had to have the rest of the wall and ceiling above ripped out, replaced, and tiled. In the reconstruction, the new contractor discovered that the ceiling was only held in by a couple of screws. He was unsure how the ceiling hadn't already fallen down!

The wiring from the house to the garage turned out to be a nightmare and I had to have someone else came and run completely new lines. I still have wires sticking up out of the ground fromTtodd never burying them!

I could continue to go on, but I think my point was made. Four YEARS later, on a project that was supposed to take "4 months", I am still having to have Todd's work fixed and completed. Lesson learned: Never trust a "friend" and ALWAYS get everything in WRITING!!! I know a few other people that have had "work" done and haven't found anyone happy with Todd's work. It is also my understanding that Todd has a number of other business ventures that he has been screwing people over in.

merely the facts

In response to the truth and diamond girl, I would be thrilled should Todd and Julie pursue this matter on a legal level. Just so you know it would be libel not slander. The statements that I made were merely the facts there was nothing subjective about them and the only turmoil Im experiencing is that which comes from discovering that people that you had 100% faith were stealing from you. The lousy construction is just a side point. Interesting though, that you both feel qualified to speak of a construction job you know nothing about!!

I think its terrific that both of you have such confidence in Todd - personally and as a contractor. By all means, have him do some work for you. Let me know how it goes. Ive yet to find 1 person (whos actually had work done by Todd) who has been satisfied with the job. Oddly enough he made the same mistakes putting in windows 19 years ago that he made with mine. If in fact Im prematurely critiquing the construction quality, please tell me how cutting off the nailing flanges allow the windows to be permently mounted?

As a side note, you both probably ought to stick to those words you already know. Contrary to what you may think using big words dont make you sound intelligent ..Especially when you use them incorrectly!!

Wow,  The two comments to Silly Girl must have come from Julie Grehl cause I don't know anyone else who is happy with Todd Grehl's work.  I agree with Silly Girl.  I had work done and it was so bad I had to hire another contractor to fix and finish the job.  Problem is that no one will stand up to this crew.  Ugh.  I say use who you want, but BUYER BEWARE.     I certainly learned my lesson.

First--I wanted to say "KUDOS" to 'The Truth's" post--and I am in 100% agreement with you on the integrity of Mr. Grehl and his wife.

Second--it really is sad the negativism that 'Silly Girl' has in her report and I am deeply saddened for you Silly Girl that you are living in such a state of turmoil which was very apparent in your post. I believe that you know the truth of this matter and you are simply attempting to ruin a good man & an AWESOME business because you did not 'understand' how a project of this magnitude would unfold. I have dealt with many contractors over the years for business and residential use and I have learned that no project is complete midway nor will it look complete. I totally agree with 'The Truth' in that you clearly have no clue what you are referring to. So do tell Silly Girl--what is the truth of the matter here?

I would like to add that I have known the Grehl's for awhile now--the work that Todd Grehl does is so top notch. His attention to detail and integrity that he exhibits is so rare to see. I would HIGHLY recommend Stonebrook Construction to anyone who is looking for a contractor for their next home improvement or business project-you will not be disappointed.

The perspective of "Silly Girl" with respect to her attack on Mr. Grehl does not withstand scrutiny. I have known Todd Grehl for sometime now and have seen the fine quality of workmanship his company does. The attention to detail his one of his personal strengths and is evident in any of his finished projects. I can not believe there is any merit to the "performance assesment" outlined in this Ripoff Report.

It defies reasoning that such a ridiculous personal attack be launched on a man whose generosity and integrity are widely known. Such inflammatory rhetoric is certainly nothing less than defamation of character and blatant slander of a man who has the respect and admiration of anyone who truly knows Todd Grehl. The report is obviously an emotionally driven assertion.

In my own building experience, remodeling anything, let alone an old barn, is a process which requires some adaption to elemental aspects of the original building and it's inherent flaws. The use of shims, and temporaily mounting a door or window are not uncommon. Since "Silly Girl" evidently interrupted the completion of the project, she can't realistically critique the quality of the outcome. And given her apparent rush to judgement, it's not difficult to believe she also failed to honestly take the time and speak to Todd about the time and materials billing.

There is no such thing as a perfect human being. But Mr. Grehl is a man whose reputation doesn't deserved to be sullied from cyberspace. "Silly Girl" would learn a valuable lesson about the difference between "silly" and "sued", should Mr. Grehl choose to opt for legal recourse in this matter.
